WVSU bows out of MEC Tournament with defeat to UC

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – West Virginia State baseball (28-22) was knocked out of the Mountain East Conference Tournament by Charleston (40-10) when the Yellow Jackets were defeated, 11-2, on Thursday afternoon at GoMart Ballpark. Both teams needed to win to stay alive after they both lost on the first day of the tournament.

Charleston struck first in the top of the second. A triple to center field with one out was followed by a ground out to score a run, 1-0.

Connor Fizer tripled in the leadoff spot in the bottom of the second. He was left stranded after a strikeout and back-to-back ground outs to the third baseman.

The Golden Eagles tacked on three runs in the top of the third. With two outs and the bases loaded, a single into center field scored two runs, 3-0. Another single to center scored the third run of the half inning, 4-0.

In the bottom of the third, Michael Stone tripled to right field and was able to score on the same play when the shortstop made a throwing error, 4-1. Ryan Kay also reached base in the inning with a single to left field but was left on base.

After a scoreless fourth inning, UC tallied three runs in the top of the fifth. A solo shot, an RBI-double and an RBI-single put WVSU down by six runs, 7-1.

Two more runs were tacked on by the Golden Eagles in the top of the sixth. A double to left field brought a base runner on second home, 8-1. A walk with the bases loaded scored the second run of the half inning, 9-1.

Mike Huber doubled to left field in the bottom of the sixth before Michael Bittinger drove him in with a single to right, 9-2. Bittinger and Nate Paulsen ended up stranded on the corners when the last out of the inning was recorded.

UC posted two runs in the eighth and another six six runs in the top of the ninth, 17-2.

State was unable to rally at the end of the game to overcome the large deficit.

The Yellow Jackets can be proud of their return to the MEC Tournament after a year's absence. Next year looks promising with only two players not returning.
