Softball splits with conference-leading Fairmont State

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State softball (15-28, 9-21 MEC) split a doubleheader with Fairmont State (31-19, 21-9 MEC) on Thursday afternoon at Lady Jackets Field. The Yellow Jackets won the first game convincingly, 9-3, before dropping the second game, 9-0.

Game 1: West Virginia State 9, Fairmont State 3, Final/7

The Falcons were first to score with an RBI-double in the top of the first, 1-0. Later in the half inning, the bases became loaded with only one out. Starting pitcher Kasey Murphy prevented any further damage with a strikeout and a pop up to get out of the jam.

The score remained unchanged until the bottom of the third when the Yellow Jackets took the lead for good. A throwing error by the shortstop allowed Addi Dillow to score from second base and tie the game, 1-1. Emele Clark singled down the left field line later in the inning to drive in the go-ahead run, 2-1. Autumn Thompson then brought in an insurance run with a single up the middle, 3-1. In the next at bat, Murphy doubled up against the fence in center to bring Thompson home, 4-1.

Fairmont cut the lead to one run in the top of the fifth. A double to the gap in right center scored two Falcons, 4-3.

With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, WVSU proceeded to add four runs to its tally. Avery Contreras drew a walk with the bases loaded to bring in the first run, 5-3. A wild pitch scored the second run, 6-3. Dillow batted in the last two runs with a single to left field, 8-3.

West Virginia State tacked on one final run in the sixth. Emele Clark reached base on a throwing error by the shortstop and was able to advance to third on the errant throw. A sacrifice bunt by Chelsea Thompson allowed Clark to touch home plate, 9-3.

Murphy gave up two hits in the top of the seventh, but did not allow a run to score to finish the game and earn her ninth win on the season.

Game 2: Fairmont State 9, West Virginia State 0, Final/7

Fairmont's Emma Gates kept the Yellow Jackets at bay in the second game of the afternoon. She tossed a complete game while only giving up three hits, which all were singles. Additionally, Gates did not walk or hit a batter.

The best chance for WVSU to end the shutout was in the bottom of the third when both Kerrigan Moore and Chelsea Thompson singled, but both were left stranded.

The contest was close until the last two innings. The Falcons picked up two runs early in the top of the first, 2-0. They scored another run in the fifth inning, 3-0.

The two runs posted in the sixth by Fairmont started to remove the doubt about the outcome of the game, 5-0. The doubt was fully removed in the seventh when the Falcons added another four runs to their total, 9-0.
