WVSU Softball ends season with Frostburg State split

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State's softball program ended the 2023 campaign with an upset split over North Division leader Frostburg State University, taking game one 7-5, then falling short in game two, 7-4. Seniors Kasey Murphy and Emma Ruth were honored before the first game.

"These two players made a massive impact on our program and were two of the first recruits I had when I became head coach," Head Coach Mattie Best said of Murphy and Ruth.

Post game records
WVSU: 15-29, 9-22 MEC
Frostburg State: 31-17, 18-11 MEC

Game one: WVSU 7, Frostburg State 5
Frostburg State opened the scoring with a solo home run in the top of the first. Emele Clark worked a one-out, seven-pitch walk in the bottom half of the first. Chelsea Thompson sacrificed herself to move Clark to second. Clark was able to score when Autumn Thompson sent a rocket through the right side of the infield.

The Bobcats retook the lead in the top of the second, 3-1.

Murphy hit a two-RBI double into right center in the bottom of the third to tie the game, scoring Autumn and Chelsea Thompson. Emma Pauley scored Murphy later in the inning on an RBI ground-out, giving State their first lead of the game. Kerigan Moore scored Clarke Moore on a two-out single.

Frostburg trimmed the lead in the top of the fourth inning, 5-4, then tied the game at 5-all in the fifth inning. Pauley responded for the second time in the game, this time in the bottom of the fifth inning when she fired a double into left field, to score Moore in what would eventually be the game winning run. Pauley later scored on a wild pitch to cap off the scoring. The Bobcats went down in order in the top of the seventh, sealing the upset.

State launched 11 hits as a team and didn't commit a single defensive error. Autumn Thompson went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Clarke Moore and Emma Pauley both were 2-for-3 at the dish. Moore scored twice, while Pauley scored once and knocked in two RBIs. Murphy fanned two and walked one in the victory.

Game two: Frostburg State 7, WVSU 4
The Bobcats scored frequently in game two, scoring two in the first, one in the third, two in the fourth, and one in the fifth, eventually hitting Yellow Jacket pitching for 14 hits.

State got a sixth inning rally going, started by Emma Ruth launching a bomb into the trees over the left field wall. Emele Clark then reached when the ball kicked up on the shortstop attempting to field it. Addi Dillow laid down a sac bunt in the next at-bat and was originally ruled out. After some discussion between the umpires, they eventually ruled the second baseman bobbled the ball, rendering Dillow safe at first on the error. Autumn Thompson hit an RBI single into center field to score Clark, followed by an RBI sac fly by Kasey Murphy in her final collegiate at-bat that scored Dillow followed by Thompson on another throwing error.

The Bobcats added a run in the seventh, 7-4. State looked like they were going to continue the rally with a lead-off single by Avery Contreras, but pinch runner Jayde Baron was doubled off when the first baseman picked a Kerigan Moore line drive out of the air, then tagged Baron. Ruth then popped out to end the game.

With WVSU effectively out of MEC post-season contention, State will look to build off of the successes of this year and continue to rebuild their roster for next season.
