WVSU completes weekend sweep by taking two from AB

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State baseball (14-10, 9-3 MEC) swept Alderson Broaddus (8-19, 2-10 MEC) on Sunday afternoon at Cal Bailey Field. The Yellow Jackets shutout the Battlers in game one, 6-0, before winning with a walk off in game two, 3-2. WVSU added four games to the win column this weekend with sweeps of AB and Notre Dame College.

Game 1: West Virginia State 6, Alderson Broaddus 0, Final/7

The Mountain East Conference's leader in ERA, Tyler Lafferty, racked up a career-high nine strikeouts while shutting out Alderson Broaddus through five innings. He gave up two hits. Reliever Camron Lewis finished the job by holding AB scoreless for the remaining two innings. He did not allow a hit.

State took the lead in the bottom of the first when a double steal rattled the catcher. The Battlers' man behind the dish made an errant throw to second that ended up in center field. Kyle Waters, who led off with a single, was able to turn on third and head to home, 1-0.

In the bottom of the second, William Glick added to the lead with a two-run homer to dead center, 3-0.  Then after reaching base with a single, Michael Bittinger was able to move over to third with keen baserunning. Waters drove him in with a sacrifice fly to center field, 4-0.

Alderson Broaddus threatened in the top of the third by loading the bases with three hit by pitches. Lafferty got out of the inning unscathed with two strikeouts and a line out.

Two more runs were tacked on by the Yellow Jackets in the bottom of the fifth. Tyler Overaitis cleared the right field fence by a large margin with Ryan Kay on base, 6-0.

Lewis allowed two baserunners in the top of the seventh with a walk and a hit by pitch before he closed out the game by forcing a double play ball.

Game 2: West Virginia State 3, Alderson Broaddus 2, Final/9

The second game of the afternoon started out as a pitcher's duel between State's Chase Norris and AB's Chandler Ballenger.

WVSU was able to pick up a run in the bottom of the first. Waters led off with an infield single before stealing second base. Overaitis then singled down the right field line to score Waters, 1-0.

The Battlers equalized in the top of the third with an RBI-single to right field that scored the runner from second base.

Alderson Broaddus then went ahead in the top of the fourth with a solo homerun to center, 2-1. Norris shook it off and retired the next three batters in order.

In the sixth inning, both teams made pitching changes. Foster Conis entered the game for WVSU and did not put a foot wrong. The Battler's reliever got two quick outs in the bottom of the sixth before Connor Fizer stepped up to the plate. Fizer proceeded to launch his seventh long ball of the season over the left field fence, 2-2.

Conis remained in the game in the top of the seventh and struck out two before forcing a groundout. The contest then went into extra innings after the Yellow Jackets were unable to score.

A scoreless eighth inning required a ninth inning to be played. Linden Carey replaced Conis and forced a groundout before recording two strikeouts. Nathan Paulsen was first up to bat in the bottom of the ninth. After a lackluster day at the plate, he made up for it with a walk-off homerun to dead center. The walk-off solo shot was his fifth homerun in two days.
