WVSU edged by Cedarville in nine-inning game

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University baseball team (3-4) dropped a nine-inning game to Cedarville (3-9) by a final score of 6-5 on Sunday afternoon at Cal Bailey Field. State racked up 11 hits, but left 10 stranded to end up on the wrong side of the box score.

Cedarville's starting pitcher, Ethan Milburn, kept West Virginia State's bats at bay through six innings. He gave up his first hit to catcher Tyler Overaitis, a single in the leadoff spot, in the bottom of the fourth. He gave up another leadoff single in the bottom of the fifth to second baseman Michael Bittinger. In the sixth, he allowed back-to-back singles before being able to get out of the inning.

Meanwhile, Cedarville registered one run each in the top of the first and sixth innings. CU scored on a fielder's choice in the first and added a second run in the sixth with an RBI-single to right field, 2-0.

In between, southpaw Chase Norris came in to pitch for WVSU in the third inning and tossed three hitless frames. He sat down four batters and only allowed one baserunner with a walk.

In the bottom of the seventh, Milburn finally cracked after topping 100 pitches. He gave up singles to third baseman William Glick and Bittinger before walking center fielder Nathan Paulsen to load the bases. Reliever Wyatt Petek was brought in to get out of the bases loaded, no outs jam. He walked in one run before getting the third out, 2-1.

The eighth inning saw seven runs between the two teams. Cedarville tacked on four runs in the top of the eighth. Three of the runs were walked in. The fourth run was scored on a fielding error, 6-1.

With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Paulsen homered to left center with two men on to close the gap, 6-4. First baseman Mike Huber drew a walk before Glick singled up the middle to make it a three-run shot.

Right hander Tyler Lafferty retired the side in order in the top of the ninth to give State a chance in the bottom of the ninth. With runners on the corners, Huber fouled out to deep right field to get one run back, 6-5. The next two batters were then retired to end the contest.

Bittinger, Glick, Overaitis and designated hitter Connor Fizer each recorded two hits. Paulsen's homerun was the only extra base hit for WVSU in the game.

West Virginia State will head to Slippery Rock next for a three-game series beginning on Friday, March 10th. The Yellow Jackets will play nine-inning games at 1 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
