Softball wins twice in twinbill versus Concord

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University softball team (7-6, 2-0 MEC) edged Concord (7-14, 0-2 MEC) in a twinbill played on Wednesday afternoon at Lady Jackets Field. The Yellow Jackets won the first game, 2-1, before winning in extra innings in the second game, 8-7.

Game 1: West Virginia State 2, Concord 1 (Final/7)

The first game of the afternoon was a pitcher's duel between West Virginia State's Kasey Murphy and Concord's Nancy-Jo Roberts. Murphy pitched exceptionally well to earn a complete game win. She allowed only three hits with five strikeouts and the one run scored on her was unearned.

The Mountain Lions broke the deadlock in the top of the sixth. Following a leadoff double, they were able to put a baserunner on third with a passed ball. That baserunner scored on a sacrifice fly, 1-0, before the last two outs of the half inning came.

Autumn Thompson then kicked off a rally in the bottom of the sixth with a double to the left-center gap. Kasey Murphy followed up with a single through the left side of the infield to move Thompson over to third. Murphy stole second next before a passed ball allowed Thompson to score, 1-1, and Murphy to advance to third. Chelsea Thompson then drove Murphy in with a single into center field, 2-1.

Murphy returned to the circle in the top of the seventh and got two quick outs with fly balls. A double that was hammered up the middle then put the tying run in scoring position. Murphy was able to get the final out of the contest with another fly ball.

Game 2: West Virginia State 8, Concord 7 (Final/8)

In the second game of the afternoon, Megan Shoemaker was nearly unhittable through four innings while State threatened to eight-run rule Concord.

Olivia McClain drove in two runs in the bottom of the first with a single to put her team on top early, 2-0.

The Mountain Lions were able to pick up a run in the top of the fourth, but only as a result of a pair of errors. Impressively, Shoemaker was able to get out of a bases loaded jam with only one run coming across, 2-1.

The Yellow Jackets responded immediately in the ensuing half inning by tacking on four runs. Emma Pauley drove in two runs with a double to right center, 4-1. Two more runs were then added on a pair of wild pitches, 6-1.

A costly error by State in the top of the fifth resulted in Concord being able to knot the score at 6-apiece. One run was scored on an RBI-double. Two runs were scored on a throwing error. A sacrifice fly scored the next run before the tying run came in on an RBI-single.

McClain drove in another run in the bottom fifth with a double to left center, 7-6. Murphy doubled to leadoff the half inning before she touched home plate.

Another error by WVSU allowed Concord to tie the score again, 7-7, in the top of the sixth. The next time either team threatened to score was in the top of the eighth.

Autumn Thompson, who replaced Shoemaker in the circle midway through the top of the fifth, faced a bases loaded, two out situation in the eighth inning. She did not buckle and got the third out with a fly ball to left field.

In the bottom of the eighth, Emma Pauley doubled to right center to get into scoring position. Avery Contreras stepped up to the plate next and singled into right field to bring home Pauley for the win.
