Yellow Jackets win second-straight road game by a grand margin

ELKINS, W.Va. – The West Virginia State women's basketball team (18-4, 13-4 MEC) won its second-straight road game at Davis & Elkins (5-16, 5-12 MEC) by a final score of 124-77 on Wednesday night. WVSU forced 30 turnovers in the contest, including 21 steals, to continually frustrate the Senators.

West Virginia State broke the school record for most points in a game by sinking a single free throw made with tenths of a second remaining on the clock. The previous school record of 123 points was set in 2016 versus Kutztown.

Six Yellow Jackets scored in double-figures to lead State to its sixth 100-point game of the season. Destiny Fields (26 points), Alana Kramer (20 points), Shelby Harmeyer (18 points), Anysa Jordan (17 points), Emyah Fortenberry (11 points) and Imani Reid (11 points) all contributed to the scoring effort in a big way.

The first quarter went back-and-forth with neither team being able to pull away from the other. West Virginia State went in front by four, 22-18, on the heels of scoring seven unanswered with two minutes to go. D&E then ended the opening period on an 11-4 run to go up by three, 29-26, at the intermission.

In the second quarter, the Yellow Jackets did pull away with a dominant stretch that started midway through the stanza. They tacked on 14 points in two-and-a-half minutes after the score was tied up. ZZ Russell and Destiny Fields both knocked down three-pointers during the surge while State swiped four steals.

Shelby Helmeyer drained a pair of treys as the clock wound down to halftime to help her team to a 15-point advantage, 61-44, going into the break.

The Yellow Jackets went on another dominant run during the third quarter. They scored 14 unanswered again to extend their lead to a massive 33 points, 86-53, with a little less than four minutes remaining in the third period. The Senators only managed to get off one shot and turned the rock over five times while State made 6-of-7 field goals including two baskets from behind the arc.

Davis & Elkins responded with an 11-3 run over the next two minutes to take a small bite out of the huge gap. An 8-2 run by WVSU followed that left the score at 97-66 in favor of the Yellow Jackets going into the fourth quarter.

The momentum stayed with State in the last period. WVSU held D&E to a mere 11 points in the final 10 minutes while posting 27 points on the Senators. Fields and Emyah Fortenberry combined for 15 of those points as the Yellow Jackets went on to win by a comfortable 47-point margin.

West Virginia State shot 43 percent from the floor and 31 percent from three-point range. Meanwhile, the Senators shot 38 percent from the field and 20 percent from beyond the arc.

The Yellow Jackets will host West Virginia Wesleyan next on Saturday, Feb. 11th. The tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
