Four Yellow Jackets set or match career highs in victory over WV Wesleyan

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State's women's basketball team cruised to a 112-58 win over West Virginia Wesleyan in the penultimate home game of the season on Saturday. WVSU's Hannah Shriver set a career mark in assists with 12, Destiny Fields set a career best in rebounds with 16, and Shelby Harmeyer matched her career best in three-pointers made in a game with seven. Felisia Ondongo also set a career high with 11 points off the bench.

Harmeyer paced the Yellow Jackets (19-4, 14-4 MEC) and led all scorers with 23 points, shooting 7-of-8 from long range and 8-of-10 overall from the field. Fields scored 22 points to pick up her third double-double of the season and Anysa Jordan added 18 points.

The Bobcats (4-18, 3-15 MEC) were paced by Emma Witt's 21 points.

The first quarter featured two ties and nine lead changes for the two teams, the first tie came just before the under five media timeout of the first quarter when the teams were locked up at 10. Imani Reed stroked a long distance jumper to give the Jackets the lead for good and kick off a 10-0 WVSU run, 15-14. Reid, ZZ Russell, Caroline Scott, and Jordan all contributed points during the run. Shriver closed the scoring in the quarter, a fast break jumper from behind the arc with 34 ticks left on the clock.

Wesleyan scored eight points in the first four minutes of the second quarter to close to within six points at 32-26, but Harmeyer hit three straight jumpers from behind the arc over a minute and a half that forced WVWC to call a timeout with 4:46 to play in the half and the Jackets held a 41-26 lead at that point. WVSU closed the half on a 16-2 run. Wesleyan's lone points following the Harmeyer run came with 19 seconds to play in the half and State took a 20-point lead at the break, 48-28. State forced eight Bobcat turnovers in the frame and held the Bobcats to 4-of-12 shooting, while hitting 9-of-19 from the field themselves.

The third quarter began all-square with both teams netting nine points. An and-one opportunity for Emyah Fortenberry kicked off another WVSU run, this time a 19-4 run that lasted almost three minutes. The Jackets forced five turnovers and hit 8-of-9 from the field including 2-for-2 from distance. State took a comfortable 37-point lead into the final 10 minutes of play, leading 80-43.

WVSU and WVWC each canned five points during the opening 90 seconds of the fourth, but State again went on a run, this time stroking 16 points to the Bobcats two over three-and-a-half minutes. Fields led the way during the stretch with nine points, Kramer scored four points and Ondongo hit a trey to cap off the run just before the final media timeout, 103-50. WVSU then cruised the rest of the way to a 112-58 victory.
