WVSU extends win streak to four games; picks up win No. 20 at AB

PHILIPPI, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University women's basketball team (20-4, 15-4 MEC) ran away with a 100-73 victory over Alderson Broaddus (5-19, 4-15 MEC) on Wednesday evening at the Rex Pyles Arena. State extended its win streak to four games while dropping 100 or more points on a team for the eighth time this season.

Four Yellow Jackets scored in double-digits. Shelby Harmeyer, Imani Reid and ZZ Russell each recorded 16 points in a balanced scoring effort. Destiny Fields was the other Yellow Jacket to reach double-figures in scoring with 12 points.

The Yellow Jackets started the game hot, outscoring the Battlers 22-5 in the opening five minutes. Five three-pointers were made by WVSU in the first five minutes to quickly create separation. Shelby Harmeyer and Destiny Fields hit two each with Hannah Shriver draining the other one.

State was not as dominant during the second half of the first quarter, but was still better than AB. Alana Kramer nailed a jumper with seconds to go in the opening period to give her team a 21-point cushion, 36-15, going into the second stanza.

Play evened out in the first half of the second quarter. In fact, the MEC opponents both dropped 13 points on the other through the initial five minutes. ZZ Russell knocked down a trey and completed a three-point play during the stretch to help the Yellow Jackets maintain their 21-point advantage, 49-28.

Scoring by both sides dried up leading into halftime. Alderson Broaddus barely edged State, 7-6, in the last five minutes of the first half with four of the Battlers' points coming from made free throws. The result was a still impressive 20-point lead, 55-35, for WVSU heading into the locker room.

AB chopped the lead down to 10 points, 62-52, with a 12-2 run during the third quarter. In the remaining three-and-a-half minutes, the Yellow Jackets dashed the hopes of Alderson Broaddus by finishing the third period on a 15-6 run. They shot 6-of-8 from the floor, including a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range, to grow their lead back to 19 points, 77-58.

The momentum stayed with WVSU in the fourth quarter. The Yellow Jackets gained a 26-point lead, 91-65, after a 14-7 run in the opening four minutes. They forced five turnovers on the way to their colossal lead.

State slowed down the pace in the final six minutes of the contest. Nevertheless, the Yellow Jackets ended the game with seven unanswered points to take their largest lead with the final score, 100-73.

WVSU forced 30 turnovers with 25 steals to keep AB off-balance throughout the clash. A 41 percent field goal percentage also contributed to the winning effort.

The Mountain East Conference officially announced that West Virginia State clinched a spot in the MEC Tournament prior to the tip-off. There are still three regular season games left to play.

WVSU will play Notre Dame (Ohio) next at home for Senior Day on Saturday, Feb. 18th. The tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
