Yellow Jackets churn out 19 hits in Sunday Sweep over PSAC

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – West Virginia State's softball team recovered from their opening loss to Clarion in the MEC/PSAC challenge over the weekend with two Sunday afternoon wins over two 2022 PSAC tournament qualifiers in IUP and Seton Hill. The Yellow Jackets scored four runs with nine hits in the win against the Griffins in the first game, followed by a nine run, 10 hit victory over the Crimson Hawks.

Post-Game Records
WVSU: 3-4
Seton Hill: 4-2
IUP: 2-3

Game 1 - WVSU 4, Seton Hill 1
Seton Hill scored their lone run in the third inning when the Jackets committed one of their two errors in the game. State responded with a two run bottom of the third via an Autumn Thompson RBI groundout that scored Kerrigan Moore followed by a Kasey Murphy single that scored Emma Ruth. Clarke Moore hit an RBI groundout of her own in the fourth that scored Emma Pauley and an overthrow by the Seton Hill shortstop fired the ball into the dugout, allowing Moore to score.

Kasey Murphy secured the win in the circle and didn't allow an earned run in her complete game effort. She sat down six Seton Hill batters and walked three. Emma Pauley went 3-for-3 and had the lone extra base hit for the Yellow Jackets, a double, and scored one run.

Game 2 - WVSU 9, Indiana (PA) 3
Ruth sent a shot into deep right center field, allowing Moore to score in the third inning. Ruth then came home on a wild pitch. IUP scored in the bottom half of the inning to cut the WVSU lead in half, 2-1. In the fifth, Ruth took off for second base and on a delayed steal, Moore once again scored. IUP scored in the bottom of the sixth to make it a one run game going into the sixth inning, 3-2.

State turned on the afterburners in the seventh, plating six. Murphy hit a 2-RBI double that scored Ruth and Moore and an IUP wild pitch to Olivia McClain allowed Thompson to come home. A Pauley triple scored Murphy and Olivia McClain. Pauley came home on an error that allowed Clarke Moore to reach base safely. IUP scored a third run in the bottom of the frame, but that was all they could manage.

Thompson took the win in the circle, striking out five and allowing no free passes to the Crimson Hawks. She allowed two earned runs. Ruth went 2-for-3 in the leadoff spot, with an RBI and two runs scored. Pauley went 2-for-4 with a triple and a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Murphy was 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run.
