WVSU leads wire-to-wire in 78-61 victory over West Liberty

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – West Virginia State forced 24 of West Liberty's 36 turnovers and out rebounded them on the offensive glass 17-10 en route to a 78-61 victory over the Hilltoppers on Saturday. State scored 34 points off of those turnovers and picked up 17 second chance points along the way.

WVSU improves to 5-4 on the season, 3-3 in conference play. West Liberty falls to 5-4 and drops to 3-2 in the Mountain East.

Anysa Jordan scored 16 points from the bench, leading all scorers, and gathered seven rebounds. Destiny Fields added 15 points and was one rebound shy of a double-double. Emyah Fortenberry scored 10 and had seven boards.

West Liberty's Corinne Thomas scored 15 points to lead the Hilltoppers. 

Fortenberry scored the game's first four points with a jumper and a pair of shots from the charity stripe. The Hilltoppers cut the lead in half, but State threw together a 15-0 run with Jordan scoring seven of those points. West Liberty scored nine points to WVSU's seven to close the first quarter.

Hallie Bailey and Jordan put together an 8-0 run for State to start off the second quarter. Paused only by a pair of West Liberty foul shots and a trey. ZZ Russell answered the West Liberty trey on the subsequent possession. State went cold from the field late in the quarter with only a pair of foul shots during West Liberty's 12-2 run. Fortenberry closed out the half with a late jumper, giving State a 41-28 halftime lead.

West Liberty committed three turnovers in the opening five-and-a-half minutes of the third frame, helping to alleviate State's 2-for-9 shooting percentage to open the quarter. West Virginia State's defense then ramped up, forcing five Hilltopper turnovers over the final three-and-a-half minutes of the period, leading to an 11-2 run with Caroline Scott scoring four, Fields hitting a trey and Fortenberry and Russell each adding two points. State ended the quarter up by 20 points. 

State and West Liberty traded blows to open the fourth quarter, with the lead hovering around 17 points through most of the first five minutes. West Liberty went on a run just before the final media timeout to get to within 12 points. West Liberty eventually came within seven points llate in the quarter, but never scored after the two minute mark and WVSU scored the final ten points of the game.

WVSU will head to Pittsburgh for a non-conference game against Point Park on Saturday Dec. 16 for a 2:00 pm tilt against the Pioneers.
