State's second half comeback falls short at Point Park

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – West Virginia State women's basketball (5-5, 3-3 MEC) dropped a non-conference contest to Point Park (8-3, 2-1 RSC) by a final score of 75-73 on Saturday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets nearly mounted an incredible comeback in the second half, but were undone by a last-second layup.

Shelby Harmeyer was State's leading scorer with 18 points. She connected on four three-pointers. Imani Reid was the other double-digit scorer for WVSU with 10 points.

The first quarter was a seesaw affair. The Yellow Jackets tied the score on four separate occasions in the opening five minutes, but were unable to take the lead. Caroline Scott's layup with just over five minutes to go tied the score at 9-apiece before a two-minute long scoring drought by both teams ensued.

State did finally gain the lead by scoring six unanswered points in the last 1:41 of the opening period. Imani Reid banked a layup with 30 seconds remaining to put her team up by one, 17-16, going into the second quarter.

The Pioneers regained the lead early in the second period. WVSU stayed on their heels up until the three-minute mark. Point Park proceeded to score nine unanswered points to go up by double-digits, 39-28, with 1:37 left in the first half.

Shelby Harmeyer drained a pair of three-pointers in the final stretch to keep the game from slipping away. The Yellow Jackets ended up trailing by eight points, 42-34, at halftime.

The Pioneers seized their largest lead yet, 13 points, within the first two minutes of the third quarter. State then spent the remainder of the third stanza chipping away at the lead and nearly closed the gap.

Between the eight and one-minute marks, WVSU went on an 18-6 run to cut the deficit to one point, 53-52. Another trey by Harmeyer capped the dominant stretch for the Yellow Jackets. Point Park then picked up the last basket of the third period to leave State down by three, 55-52, going into the final quarter.

WVSU regained the lead, 57-56, for the first time since the end of the first quarter when Shanley Woods hit a shot from behind the arc just under the nine-minute mark. A back-and-forth battle followed all the way down to the final buzzer.

State grabbed its largest lead, 71-66, with three minutes to go after ZZ Russell made a pair of free throws. The Pioneers then tied the score at 71-all after making a three-pointer with two minutes remaining. The score was tied up once more at 73-even with 39 seconds left after a trading of layups. The game-winner came with five seconds on the clock when Point Park's Aichata Ballo scored the last basket of the contest from underneath the rim.

WVSU will head to Western Kentucky on Friday, Dec. 29 for a 6:30 p.m. clash next.
