WVSU falls on the road to Western Kentucky

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – West Virginia State's women's basketball team fell to Division I opponent Western Kentucky University on Friday by a final tally of 97-39. Western Kentucky scored the first bucket of the game and never trailed.

West Virginia State falls to 5-6 overall and remains at 3-3 in the Mountain East. Western Kentucky improves to 9-6 overall. They have yet to play a conference game this season within Conference USA. 

Imani Reid answered a Hilltopper trey to open the scoring for the Yellow Jackets. WVSU then went on a three-and-a-half minute drought that allowed Western Kentucky to expand their lead to nine points, 11-2. Emyah Fortenberry eventually broke the drought with just over five-and-a-half minutes to play in the stanza. Anya Jordan hit the final field goal of the quarter for State at 3:26. WKU closed the quarter on a 10-2 run to put State down 29-14 at the end of the quarter.

WVSU only managed two points in the second quarter. An Ashley Kerekes layup with 9:11 to play in the half. WKU, meanwhile, scored 28 points, taking a 57-16 lead into the halftime break.

WVSU scored the first five points of the third quarter, a pair of Jordan field goals and a Shelby Harmeyer foul shot. WKU scored their first field goal of the second half at the 7:21 mark, a three pointer. State and WKU were back and forth through the first five minutes of the quarter, but WKU went on a 15-4 run to close the quarter, 79-30.

Jordan opened the fourth quarter with a jumper after back-to-back WKU fouls. ZZ Russell scored five points 4:33 apart and freshman McKennan Hall scored a pair of foul shots in the waning moments of the game to complete the WVSU scoring, falling by a final tally of 97-39.

Jordan was the leading scorer for WVSU with 10 points. Latifat Olatunji grabbed six boards to lead the team. WVSU shot 14-59 from the field, 2-24 from three-point range and were out-rebounded by the Hilltoppers 54-36.

The Yellow Jackets will open the new year in the Walker Convocation Center on January 2, 2024 for a 2:00 pm tilt against the Bluefield State Big Blues.
