WVSU Track & Field opens indoor season at Commonwealth College Opener

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The West Virginia State University track & field team opened the indoor season at the Commonwealth College Opener on Saturday. WVSU performed admirably in the meet that included the likes of Louisville, Stanford, Tennessee and Texas.

The Yellow Jackets finished in the top five in three events. Kaname Bryant placed fifth in the men's 60 meters finals with a sub-seven second time (6.94).  Matthias Watson placed fourth in the men's 400 meters finals with a time of 50.77 seconds. Eddie King Jr. came in second place in the mile with a 4:38.69 pace. 

In total, WVSU recorded 10 top 10 finishes at the Commonwealth College Opener. Those finishes came in the men's 60m, men's 200m, men's 400m, men's 600m, men's 1 mile, and men's shot put.

On the women's side, Candace Morris barely missed the national provisional qualifier time in the 60 meters. The Lady Yellow Jackets registered 10 top 20 finishes. Those finishes came in the 200m, the 400m, the 600m, the mile, the shot put and the weight throw.

State will compete at the HBCU Showcase in New York, N.Y. on Saturday, Jan. 13 next.
