Yellow Jackets win third-straight versus Frostburg

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State men's basketball (4-3, 2-2 MEC) won by a comfortable margin, 85-56, against Frostburg State on Saturday at the Walker Convocation Center. The Yellow Jackets picked up their third-consecutive win with the victory over the Bobcats.

Miguel Martinez was the game's leading scorer with 15 points. He shot 3-of-6 from three-point range. Anthony Pittman also scored in double-digits with 10 points while grabbing five boards and swiping three steals.

The first half was a low-scoring affair. Neither team was able to break 20 points through the opening 14 minutes. In fact, the score was locked at 19-apiece with 6:17 remaining.

WVSU was able to pull away in the last six minutes of the opening stanza with a 13-3 run. Martinez led the charge with seven points to his name during the stretch. He banked two layups and drained a three-pointer in between. Pittman capped the run with a layup at the buzzer to put his team up by 10 points, 32-22, at the break.

The Yellow Jackets maintained their 10-point lead through the first 90 seconds of the second half before leaving Frostburg in the dust. Over the next five minutes, State outscored the Bobcats by a 15-2 margin. Frostburg went cold during the span, shooting 1-of-9 from the field. Meanwhile, WVSU made 6-of-7 free throws and connected on 4-of-8 field goals. Pittman concluded the game-defining run with an emphatic alley-oop dunk from Martinez to give the Yellow Jackets a 23-point advantage, 53-30.

In the nearly 14 minutes that remained in the contest, the Bobcats never came close to catching up to WVSU. State even extended its lead to 30 points, 80-50, with 2:45 left to play after scoring nine unanswered. The rest of the game was a formality until the clock ticked down to triple zeros.

The Yellow Jackets shot 44 percent from the field while knocking down 10 treys as a team. In comparison, Frostburg shot below 35 percent from the field, from three-point range and at the charity stripe. State also dominated on the defensive boards with 40 rebounds compared to 22 by the Bobcats.

WVSU will host again when Wheeling comes to town on Wednesday, Dec. 6 for a 7:30 p.m. clash next.
