Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Bryan Shepherd, Assistant Sports Information Director

#13 WVSU falls to Concord at home

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – No. 13 West Virginia State's women's basketball team shot just 24 percent from the field and 11 percent from three-point range to fall to Concord University at home, 70-57. Just two Yellow Jackets were in double figures in the game. Shanley Woods led the State scoring with 11 points and Imani Reid added 10.

WVSU was ranked No. 13 in the WBCA National DII NCAA Top 25 Poll that came out just minutes before tipoff.

WVSU falls to 3-2 with the loss, 1-1 in the MEC while Concord advances to 3-2 and 2-0 in conference play.

WVSU actually dominated the offensive glass, gathering 27 offensive rebounds to Concord's 16. Concord flipped the margin on the defensive boards and both teams ended with 53 rebounds in the game. Emyah Fortenberry led all rebounders with 15 boards.

Anysa Jordan opened the scoring for the Yellow Jackets with a trey 68 seconds into the game. State's next bucket didn't come until over two minutes later, a layup by Reid. State's second and final lead came just prior to the under-five media timeout off of a Destiny Fields jumper. State didn't score again until the 90 second mark of the quarter, on an Ashley Kerekes fast-break jumper from long range, but State fell into a 22-10 hole after ten minutes.

WVSU cut the deficit to single-digits for the first time since the middle of the first quarter with a fast-break Shelby Harmeyer layup with just over five minutes to play in the half. Concord responded, extending the lead to 16 points at one point, but a late Shanley Woods layup cut the halftime lead to 14 for Concord.

WVSU's deficit continued to grow in the third quarter, out to as many as 21 points at the media timeout, but State turned up the pressure and held the Mountain Lions to just three field goals for the rest of the quarter, but WVSU's shots wouldn't fall during that period as the Yellow Jackets only managed three of their own and they trailed by 15 after 30 minutes.

State held the Mountain Lions to 13 points in the final period but State still struggled from the field, going 1-of-9 from distance and 5-of-17 from the field in the fourth quarter. They only made up two points in the frame, dropping their third straight to Concord, and ninth of the last 10 contests.

WVSU will take the thanksgiving break off and then head to Fairmont State on Wednesday, November 29th for a 5:30 pm matchup against the Fighting Falcons.
