Women’s Basketball falls short at Fairmont State

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – West Virginia State's women's basketball team fell behind early to Fairmont State in the first quarter and trailed by as much as 28 points. They tied the game with 57 seconds to play, but never scored again in a 94-88 loss to the Fighting Falcons. 

WVSU falls to 3-3 on the season, 1-2 in the Mountain East Conference. Fairmont State remains perfect at 6-0, 3-0 in the Conference.

Shelby Harmeyer led the offense for WVSU with 15 points, four boards and four steals. Anysa Jordan scored 14 and gathered six boards. Imani Reid scored 13 and Destiny Fields scored 11. 

Alyssa DeAngelo led all scorers for Fairmont State with 30 points and hit five shots from all three ranges.

Fairmont scored nine points before WVSU was able to get on the board with a Fields layup nearly three minutes into the game. Fairmont State then went on another run, this one 11-3 to put State behind by double-digits. WVSU fell behind 32-19 after the first 10 minutes of play.

Fairmont State opened the scoring in the second quarter with seven straight, putting WVSU down by 20. Harmeyer hit a layup 70 seconds into the quarter, but the next field goal for State didn't come until the 5:11 mark when Hallie Bailey scored a layup. ZZ Russell, Reid, and Fields each contributed a single field goal in the quarter. By the halftime break, however, the deficit had ballooned to 26 points.

WVSU began chipping away at the lead in the third quarter and eventually put together a 15-1 run through the midpoint of the third quarter, kicked off by a ZZ Russell driving layup at the 4:59 mark. Harmeyer and Ashley Kerekes each hit treys with Kerekes's jumper coming at the end of the run with 33 seconds remaining. Fairmont State's DeAngelo hit a jumper on their last possession of the period to get the FSU lead back to 15 points, 73-58.

WVSU's defense came alive in the final six minutes of the game, forcing seven turnovers from Fairmont State and threw together a 19-3 run started when Kerekes picked DeAngelo's pocket and laid it up with 5:05 to play in the final quarter. Harmeyer gathered up a Reid long-range miss and laid it back up to tie the score at 88-all. However, State shot 0-4 from the field in the final minute of the game, and Fairmont State walked away with the win 94-88.

WVSU returns to the Walker Convocation Center on Saturday, December 2nd for a 2 pm appointment with Frostburg State.
