Yellow Jackets stumble late at Glenville State

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – West Virginia State men's basketball (1-2, 0-1 MEC) was defeated by Glenville State (1-2, 1-0 MEC) by a final score of 84-75 at the Waco Center on Saturday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets held the lead at the end of a low-scoring first half, but eventually fell behind in the high-scoring second half of the contest.

Anthony Pittman scored a team-high 17 points to go along with seven boards, four assists and two blocks. Both Bunky Brown and Nate Mims came close to a double-double. Brown recorded 14 points and nine rebounds while Mims registered 12 points and nine boards.

Neither team shot well in the first half. The Yellow Jackets converted on 30 percent of their shots from the floor while the Pioneers made only 22 percent of their shots from the field.

Glenville was the team with the lead for the majority of the first half.  The Pioneers went up by as much as four points on multiple occasions in the opening 10 minutes of play, but West Virginia State continually came back to tie the score.

The Yellow Jackets finally gained their first lead of the game with 5:24 left in the opening period after Kalil Camara was sent to the charity stripe and made both of his free throw attempts, 21-19. The score ended up knotted again shortly thereafter with a GSU layup on the other end of the court.

A five-point swing then occurred when Brown knocked down a three-pointer before Mahzi Thames drove in the lane for a layup, 26-21.

In the remaining two minutes of the first half, the Pioneers clawed back to within one point of WVSU, 26-25. Miguel Martinez then helped the Yellow Jackets to a four-point advantage, 29-25, when he hit a trey at the halftime buzzer.

Both teams made a higher percentage of shots in the second half. Glenville's 53 percent shooting from the floor and 48 percent shooting from behind the arc was just tough to beat.

West Virginia State actually maintained its lead, except for a few brief moments, through 15 minutes of second-half action. In fact, the Yellow Jackets seized their largest lead of the game, 64-58, around the six-minute mark after Landry Palata sunk a pair of free throws.

The momentum shifted two minutes later when Glenville embarked on a 14-3 run. The Pioneers made three shots from distance during the three-minute stretch to go up by 10, 79-69, with a minute and a half to go. The late momentum shift turned out to be too much to overcome for WVSU.

West Virginia State will return to its home court for a 7:30 p.m. tussle with Concord on Tuesday, Nov. 21 next.
