No. 16 WVSU Women’s Basketball forces 18 Kutztown turnovers in victory over Golden Bears

CALIFORNIA, Pa. – Hannah Shriver hit a trey with 5:10 left in the final period to put the Yellow Jackets up for good and held Kutztown scoreless over the last 2:11 in State's final game of the PSAC/MEC Conference Challenge on Sunday, a 65-61 victory. WVSU forced 18 of Kutztown's 31 turnovers in the game.

WVSU advances to 1-1 on the season, while Kutztown falls to 0-2.

Shriver led most of the stat categories for State. She had 16 points, six assists, eight rebounds and two steals. Shelby Harmeyer had four steals, three boards and nine points. Imani Reid and Anysa Jordan each contributed nine points as well.

Kutztown's Abbey Hearn led the Golden Bears with 16 points.

Jordan hit a triple a little over a minute into the game to kick off the scoring for both teams. Emily Anthony added a free throw and Ashley Davis hit a layup before Kutztown got off the schneid with a jumper in the paint just over three minutes in. A foul shot by Reid, a jumper from Jordan and a trey from Shriver extended the lead to eight for the Yellow Jackets heading into the under five timeout. Shanley Woods hit a triple with 2:35 on the clock to round out the Yellow Jackets scoring in the first frame, but Kutztown closed the quarter on a 9-0 run to take the lead.

Destiny Fields tied the game up with a layup halfway through the second quarter at 23-all, followed by a layup from Harmeyer to retake the lead. A minute later, Kutztown tied the game back up then re-took the lead. Harmeyer hit a three late, but Kutztown responded to take a one-point lead into the break.

A Jordan layup two minutes in and a Reid layup shortly after gave State the lead back for a couple minutes in the third quarter. A Kutztown layup and foul shot gave the Golden Bears a short lived 37-36 lead as Shriver canned two foul shots on the next possession. The rest of the stanza was back and forth. Ashley Kerekes cut the deficit to one with thirty seconds left, but another late jumper, this time from beyond the arc, gave Kutztown the lead heading into the final 10 minutes.

Shriver's three with 5:10 to go in the game put WVSU up for good, eventually extending the lead to eight points with a pair of free throws from Reid, a jumper from Reid and a layup from Harmeyer with 3:30 to play. Kutztown cut that lead to three with 2:11 to play, but they didn't score again and a free throw from Shriver with two seconds left set the final score.

WVSU will have their home opener against Carlow University on Wednesday, Nov. 15 at 5:30 pm inside the Walker Convocation Center.
