WVSU sets seven school and MEC records in victory over Carlow

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State's women's basketball defeated the Carlow University Celtics by a final of 141-32 inside the Walker Convocation Center on Wednesday evening. State shattered the record for points in a single game in school history and then set three more school records and three Mountain East records.

WVSU advances to 2-1 overall, while Carlow falls to 0-1.

The points were well distributed amongst the entire team with Shelby Harmeyer coming away with the most points. She scored 22 on six treys and 8-of-13 shooting. Imani Reid scored 18, Hannah Shriver scored 15, Ashley Kerekes scored 14, Destiny Fields, Emyah Fortenberry and Felesia Ondongo each contributed 13, and Hallie Bailey rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11. Fortenberry also grabbed 12 boards for a double-double.

State grabbed the lead at the 9:32 mark of the first quarter, opening the scoring with a pair of free throws from Fields. 15 points later, Carlow scored their only points of the first quarter at the 6:49 mark. State then went on a 30-0 run to close out the first quarter. Carlow wound up scoring 15 points in the second quarter to State's 35 points and State led at the half 82-17. That scoreline established two Mountain East records, one for points in a single half, which was previously 80 by Glenville State at Wheeling on Jan. 5, 2022, and the second for halftime margin, which was 53 points in the same game.

WVSU started the second half on a 28-0 run, hitting the century mark with 5:28 remaining in the quarter on a Latifat Olitunji jumper. Carlow's first field goal of the half didn't come until there were 46 seconds left in the frame, 115-21.

State matched the school record for points in a game with 8:32 to play then broke it 20 seconds later with a Kerekes fast break layup. Carlow's final field goal of the game came with 35 seconds left, a jumper from beyond the arc.

When the final horn sounded, State had established three more school records: most assists in a single game (38), most steals in a single game (28), and most field goals made in a single game (56). The 109 margin of victory also reset the MEC record set by Glenville St. against Bluefield on Jan. 8, 2018 which was 100.

WVSU will head north to Glenville State on Saturday to take on the Pioneers in the Waco Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
