Men's Basketball upended by buzzer beater from Shaw

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State men's basketball (1-1) came up one point short, 68-67, to Shaw (1-1) in the final game of the Earl Lloyd Classic on Saturday at the Walker Convocation Center. The Yellow Jackets actually held the lead for three minutes longer than Shaw, but were upended by a buzzer-beating layup.

Nate Mims led State in scoring with 13 points. Bunky Brown also scored in double-digits with 10 points in the game. Meanwhile, Anthony Pittman grabbed a game-high eight rebounds while recording seven points and registering four steals.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair until the six-and-a-half minute mark when WVSU kicked off a 9-2 run. Pittman led the charge with a turn around jumper and a three-pointer. State ended up with a seven-point lead, 27-20, with four-and-a half minutes remaining in the opening half.

The Bears were able to cut the lead to three points, 32-29, with a minute to go. Baskets were then traded by the teams in the final minute to leave WVSU up by three, 34-31, at the break.

Shaw opened the second half on a 9-2 spurt to become the frontrunners.

The Yellow Jackets were able to shift the momentum later on with a 13-5 run that lasted over six minutes.  A pair of free throws made by Kalil Camara capped the run and left State with a four-point advantage, 55-51.

The Bears responded with seven unanswered points to retake the lead. The lead changed four more times in the six minutes that remained in the contest.

Pittman was fouled and made both of his free throw attempts with just over a minute to go to give his team the lead for the last time, 67-66. He then made an emphatic block on a three-point attempt by Shaw with four seconds on the clock. The Bears inbounded the ball and were able to drive in the lane for a tough layup that bounced around the rim before dropping in, 68-67.

The Yellow Jackets will return to action next Saturday, Nov. 18 for the conference opener at Glenville State. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
