Football falls to UC; Felder etches name in record books

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State football (4-6, 4-5 MEC)  fell to rivals Charleston (9-1, 8-1 MEC) by a final score of 52-20 on Saturday afternoon at Lakin-Ray Field at Dickerson Stadium. The Yellow Jackets kept the game close until the second half.

Junior running back Joel Felder broke multiple school records in the game. He rushed 26 times for 126 yards and scored twice to set new single season records for rushing yards (1,115) and rushing touchdowns (13). Felder became the first Yellow Jacket since 1988 to rush for over 1,000 yards when Vince Powell set the previous record of 1,066 rushing yards.

West Virginia State scored first when quarterback Caleb Jantuah shoveled a pass to tight end Nate Baker for an eight-yard touchdown midway through the first quarter. UC then leveled the score on the ensuing drive by completing a 47-yard touchdown pass.

The Golden Eagles went ahead for the first time late in the second quarter. They ended a 7-play, 99-yard touchdown drive with less than two minutes left in the first half. The score remained 14-7 in favor of UC at halftime.

Charleston pulled away in the third quarter by scoring 21 unanswered points, 35-7. The deficit grew to 38 points, 45-7, after UC converted a field goal and added a pick six early in the fourth quarter.

Felder broke into the end zone from three yards out halfway through the fourth quarter to break the previous single season school record of 11 rushing touchdowns, 45-13.

The Golden Eagles tacked on one more touchdown, 52-13, on the following drive. Felder was then left just short of breaking the single season rushing yard record at State when Jantuah had a pass intercepted. On third and 11 for UC, Jy Martin sacked the quarterback while forcing a fumble to be recovered by Xavius Hager. With 39 seconds to go, Felder broke off a run of 45 yards on first down to shatter the previous record. He ended up crossing the goal line once more from 16 yards out to further his historic season marks.

Four out of West Virginia State's six defeats this season were decided by seven points or less. The Yellow Jackets will now have to wait until 2024 to set the record straight.
