INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University women's basketball team (10-2, 5-2 MEC) won its fourth-straight game against Davis & Elkins (3-9, 3-4 MEC) by a final score of 103-72 on Wednesday night at the Walker Convocation Center. The Yellow Jackets outscored the Senators in all four quarters and scored 40 points off turnovers, along with 37 second chance points, for another convincing victory.

WVSU is currently in a three-way tie for third place in the Mountain East Conference standings and is one of only three teams with 10 wins on the season so far. State is ranked sixth in the D2SIDA Atlantic Region poll at the moment.

Five Yellow Jackets scored in double figures including Anysa Jordan (14), Shelby Harmeyer (13), Hannah Shriver (11), Destiny Fields (11) and ZZ Russell (10). Shriver also dished out a game-high seven assists while Emyah Fortenberry led her team on the boards with 12 rebounds.

State trailed D&E in the opening five minutes of the contest until three-straight treys were made by WVSU without a response from the Senators. Harmeyer knocked down the first three-pointer around the halfway point of the first quarter and added a second in less than 30 seconds. Russell then hit a shot from behind the arc to put the Yellow Jackets up by six, 17-11, with 3:42 remaining.

Davis & Elkins scored six unanswered down the stretch to get back within two points, but State finished the opening period on a 5-0 run to take a seven-point cushion, 28-21, into the second quarter.

In the second quarter, the Yellow Jackets shot over 50 percent from the field and came up with five steals to leave D&E in the dust. Jordan and Fields each posted seven points in the second period to lead the scoring effort. A total of 32 points was scored by WVSU to create serious separation. State then went into halftime with an 18-point advantage, 60-42.

After their best offensive quarter of the game, the Yellow Jackets had their best defensive quarter by holding the Senators to only nine points in the third period. State forced 10 turnovers during the third quarter while Davis & Elkins shot 3-of-17 from the floor. WVSU capped the third stanza with a 12-2 run that resulted in an 80-51 lead going into the final 10 minutes.

With the contest pretty much decided, the Yellow Jackets were able to ease up in the fourth quarter. Nevertheless, they still outscored their opponents, 23-21. Newcomer Natalyia Sayles made her debut in the last four minutes and scored six points with two rebounds. State hit the 100-point mark with 1:36 left on the clock to make it two-straight games with at least 100 points scored. This was the third time this season that WVSU broke the century-mark.

WVSU will travel to Buckhannon next to take on West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday, Jan. 7th. The tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
