No. 24 Men's Basketball drops game to Frostburg

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The No. 24 West Virginia State men's basketball (15-5, 9-5 MEC) dropped a game to Frostburg State (6-14, 2-12 MEC) by a final score of 78-73 on Saturday afternoon at the Walker Convocation Center. The Yellow Jackets nearly completed a second half comeback, but came up short in the end.

Sophomore guard Dwaine Jones led the Yellow Jackets in scoring again with 19 points. He added six assists and drained two three-point buckets. Fellow sophomore guard Samier Kinsler shot 4-of-8 from three-point range on his way to 14 points. Junior forward Malik Whitaker made five of his six shots taken from the floor on his way to 12 points.

In the opening seven minutes of the contest, West Virginia State sank one free throw and fell behind 22-1 to the Bobcats. A 19-4 run by WVSU followed that brought the Yellow Jackets back to within six points, 26-20, of Frostburg with eight minutes left in the first half. Kinsler knocked down three treys while Whitaker and Anthony Pittman added one trey each during the stretch.

The game evened out in the remaining minutes of the opening stanza. Jones connected on a three-pointer right before the buzzer to cut the deficit to eight points, 44-36, at halftime.

The first ten minutes of the second half was played to an even 15-15 split. West Virginia State then pulled out in front by scoring 10 unanswered over the next two minutes to go up by two, 61-59. Ibn Loyal and Taevon Horton each made a three-pointer and a layup during the go-ahead spurt.

Both teams then struggled to score as the clock wound down. The Bobcats were able to regain the lead by the three-minute mark before Whitaker hit a three-pointer to tie it at 68-all with two minutes to go. Each team then scored two points to push the score to 70-apiece with a minute to play.

The Yellow Jackets turned the rock over twice in the final minute and made 1-of-2 treys while Frostburg made 3-of-4 buckets from the field and a pair of free throws for the win.

WVSU shot 44 percent from the floor and 43 percent from three-point range, but only 65 percent from the charity stripe. Meanwhile, FSU stuck to easy baskets with 56 points in the paint compared to 24 by West Virginia State.

The Yellow Jackets will host nationally-ranked, conference-leading West Liberty next on Wednesday, Feb. 1st. The tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
