No. 15 Men's Basketball comes back in second half to beat AB

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The No. 15 West Virginia State University men's basketball team (15-1, 9-1 MEC) came back in the second half to beat Alderson Broaddus (4-10, 3-7 MEC) by a final score of 82-79 on Saturday afternoon at the Walker Convocation Center. The Yellow Jackets were down by 12 points with seven minutes left and shifted the momentum to extend their win streak to seven games.

Sophomore guard Dwaine Jones helped bail his team out with a season-high 19 points. He shot 80 percent from the floor. Junior forward Noah Jordan also stepped up with 14 points on 6-for-8 shooting along with eight boards. Redshirt junior Anthony Pittman grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds with four assists, three blocks and two steals.

West Virginia State rushed out a 9-2 lead in the opening four minutes of the contest. Samier Kinsler capped the stretch by draining a three-pointer. Two minutes later, the Battlers tied the score at 11-apiece with their own 9-2 run. Play started to even out after the initial six minutes with the old WVIAC rivals going shot-for-shot.

Alderson Broaddus gained a slight five-point edge, 36-31, with 2:27 remaining in the first half after scoring eight unanswered in a two-minute span. The Yellow Jackets responded with a quick 6-2 run down the stretch to pull back within one point, 38-37. The Battlers' Jalen Knott then nailed a buzzer-beating trey to hand WVSU a four-point deficit, 41-37, going into halftime.

In the opening five minutes of the second half, AB pulled further in front by dropping nine unanswered to go up by 10 points, 54-44. State did not let the game slip away, however, and used a 13-4 run over the ensuing three minutes to come back to within one point again, 58-57. Both Miguel Martinez and Aboubacar knocked down three-point shots on the backend of the big run.

With only seven minutes left on the clock, the Battlers seized the largest lead of the game after scoring nine without a response from WVSU. The Yellow Jackets suddenly found themselves down by 12, 74-62, with time running out.

Over the next five minutes, State incredibly outscored AB 20-2 to take the lead for the first time since the opening four minutes of the game. The Yellow Jackets shot 80 percent from the field during the game-defining stretch and forced seven turnovers while holding the Battlers to 14 percent shooting. Jordan and Jones combined for 16 points during the monstrous run to give WVSU a six-point lead, 82-76, with just under two minutes to go.

In the final two minutes, the only shot made by either team was a three-pointer by AB's Zach Simpkins to give the game its final score, 82-79.

State shot 52 percent from the floor and scored 33 fastbreak points to pull off the comeback victory.

The Yellow Jackets will host Glenville State next on Wednesday, Jan. 18th. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
