No. 11 WVSU suffers second defeat of season to Glenville

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The No. 11 West Virginia State men's basketball team (15-2, 9-2 MEC) was defeated by Glenville State (11-6, 7-4 MEC) by a final score of 91-77 on Wednesday night at the Walker Convocation Center. Shots simply did not fall for the Yellow Jackets as they only converted on 35 percent of their attempts from the field.

Redshirt junior forward Anthony Pittman and sophomore guard Samier Kinsler were the game's leading scorers with 25 and 24 points respectively. Pittman came close to a double-double with eight rebounds. Graduate guard Taevon Horton scored in double-figures with 11 points, including three treys.  Meanwhile, junior forward Noah Jordan led the Yellow Jackets in rebounding with 13 boards.

The first half did not go well for the Yellow Jackets. They fell behind 16-5 after about eight minutes ticked off the clock. The deficit then grew to 17 points, 30-13, with seven minutes remaining in the opening half and left a lot of catching up to do for State.

In the final seven minutes of the first half, WVSU started going shot-for-shot with the Pioneers. State barely outscored Glenville, 16-15, during that stretch until a buzzer-beating jumper nullified the positive run and gave the Yellow Jackets an 18-point deficit, 47-29, to overcome in the second half. They were undone by a 28 percent field goal percentage compared to 47 percent shooting from the floor by GSU.

State played considerably better in the second stanza and actually outscored Glenville 48-42. WVSU shot 40 percent from the field in the second 20 minutes, but still struggled from three-point range with 4-of-20 three-pointers converted.

The Yellow Jackets faced their largest deficit of the night at the 14-minute mark when they trailed by 25 points, 61-36. They valiantly fought back over the next six minutes with a 15-3 run in which six different Yellow Jackets put points on the board. WVSU was still left with a 13-point gap, 64-51, to close after the big run.

The next big run for WVSU kicked off with 4:36 left in the contest. This time, State went on a 15-4 run to make things interesting at the end. Pittman contributed to the late effort with seven points while Kinsler capped the stretch by completing a three-point play that cut the lead to seven, 77-70, with a minute-and-a-half to go.

In what remained of the contest, Glenville converted 10-of-12 free throw attempts to prevent any late heroics by State.

The Yellow Jackets will have a shot at redemption when they host rivals Charleston next on Saturday, Jan. 21. The tip-off at the Walker Convocation Center is scheduled for 4 p.m.
