INSTITUTE W.Va. — WVSU's women's soccer team looks to continue the domination of the MEC South on Sunday when the Concord Mountain Lions come to town. WVSU knocked off then-No. 6 Concord in Beckley on Sept. 7, 2-1.
GETTING UP TO SPEED
WVSU and Concord's previous matchup resulted in what was considered at the time an upset win for the Yellow Jackets. All three goals in the match were scored in the second half.
Maria Amaral and
Fran Soares-Cupertino each pocketed a goal for the Yellow Jackets. Concord doubled the number of shots the Yellow Jackets took but couldn't sneak one past sophomore goalie
Laura Galindo during the run of play. The Mountain Lions's lone goal came from a penalty kick in the 75th minute, slicing the Yellow Jacket lead in half.
THE BUZZ AT STATE
The Yellow Jackets remain atop the MEC South after knocking off cross-town rivals Charleston 2-1 in the Kanawha River Derby on Wednesday, sitting at 7-0 on the season and 5-0 in conference play. Soares-Cupertino continued her scoring ways by scoring her 10th of the year, good enough to lead the Mountain East and she's ranked third nationally for total goals. She's also tied for first nationally in points per game with 3.43. Points per game awards two points for a goal and one point for an assist.
The Yellow Jackets have scored the most goals in the Mountain East, putting 26 shots past opposing keepers.
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAIN LIONS
The Mountain lions are currently second in the MEC South with a 5-2 overall record, 3-2 in the Mountain East. Since dropping two straight at the beginning of September, Concord has rattled off three straight victories against West Virginia Wesleyan, UC, and Glenville State, only allowing one total goal in the three contests. Jayme Millard remains as the leading scoring for the Mountain Lions with six goals and five other players have two goals each. Goalie Leah Marsh has only allowed seven goals all season and has two shutouts.
GETTING NOTICED, NATIONALLY
The Yellow Jackets moved up in the United Coaches Poll Atlantic Rankings this week to fourth and started receiving national votes. Concord re-entered the regional poll this week and currently sits 10th.
