Volleyball sweeps Concord in first MEC clash of season

ATHENS, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University volleyball team swept Concord on the road in the first Mountain East Conference contest for both sides this season on Tuesday night. The Yellow Jackets did not miss a beat despite playing Bluefield State at the same time yesterday. WVSU's win streak now stands at 12 matches as well as its sweep tally for the year.

West Virginia State progressed to 14-1 overall and 1-0 in the MEC with the win while Concord regressed to 6-10 on the season and 0-1 in league play with the loss.

Junior Kiersten Eggleton was on fire with a game-high 11 kills, four service aces, and 16 points. She also had two block assists, 19 assists, and 10 digs in the match. Fellow junior Diamond'Nique Young led all players with five blocks, including three block solos. She also recorded six kills to account for 10 points. Classmate Peri Martin was the assists leader of the game with 20 on the night.

The Mountain Lions had a sliver of hope in the first set when they went ahead, 7-6. That hope soon faded as the next five points all went to WVSU, 11-7. Three consecutive service aces by Eggleton during the stretch helped the Yellow Jackets regain momentum. CU then closed the gap to one point, 15-14. Concord came no closer as the Yellow Jackets exploded on a 10-1 run to claim set one, 25-15.

The second set saw multiple momentum shifts before it ended up tied at 19-all. Nevertheless, State showed off its ability to finish strong by winning six of the following eight points. WVSU did not commit a single attack error at the backend of set two while CU made two. Three kills and a service ace by the Yellow Jackets was the rest of what was needed to win the second set, 25-21.

The third set was never in doubt for State. WVSU rushed out to a 9-2 lead and never looked back. The dominance of the Yellow Jackets in the final set of the match ended with a service ace by Ashlynne Davis. State took set three easily, 25-14, and kept its win streak alive.

Concord's hitting percentage was a measly .066 compared to a respectable .220 hitting percentage by West Virginia State. WVSU also far surpassed CU in every statistical category.

The Yellow Jackets will continue their conference schedule with a match against Glenville State (11-5) on Friday night at the Walker Convocation Center. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
