Lucky Number 13 as State Extends Streak with Sweep Friday

INSTITUTE, W.VA. –  West Virginia State Volleyball continued with their hot streak Friday, winning their 13th consecutive contest after sweeping Glenville State by scores of 25-4, 25-20, 25-13.

The junior duo of Kiersten Eggleton and Diamond'Nique Young led the way for the Yellow Jackets, each posting nine kills in the match. Young was once again dynamic with a .538 hitting percentage, while classmate Alex Darby was also impressive with a .500 clip, tallying five kills to accompany a team-best 12 digs. Eggleton had five blocks, with graduate student Grace Martin topping the net game with six, including a solo rejection.

The 25-4 opening stanza was the fewest points allowed by State in a set this season, as the Yellow Jackets recorded nine straight points to secure the first set.

In the second frame, Glenville held a 17-10 lead before WVSU began to trim the deficit. A trio of points that featured a block from Young and Eggleton and kills from Martin and junior Jacklyn Simms cut the lead to 19-15.

State responded by tying the set and subsequently taking the lead on a 10-point rally to pull off the comeback. That sequence featured four kills from Darby as the Yellow Jackets secured the 2-0 match lead at 25-20.

WVSU continued with the momentum in what was ultimately the finale, putting up an 11-0 run, including two Darby aces, to open the set. State continued to control the frame, using a trio of three-point rallies to build a 20-5 advantage. Glenville attempted to threaten, but a service error delivered match point and a kill from Young secured the sweep, 25-13.

Simms finished the match with seven kills and classmate Peri Martin dished out a match-best 15 assists.
