Yellow Jackets Sting Saturday, Extend Streak to 10

BUCKHANNON, W.VA. --  West Virginia State Volleyball continued their winning ways Saturday, taking down league foe Glenville State 3-1 (25-14, 26-28, 25-15, 25-17) and finishing the weekend with a sweep of West Virginia Tech (25-13, 25-11, 25-18).

The Yellow Jackets extended their win streak to 10 matches, and now boast a 12-1 record on the season.

MATCH 1: WVSU 3, GLENVILLE 1
A trio of double-digit kill performances led the way for State; graduate student Grace Martin and junior transfer Diamond'Nique Young each tallied 11 kills, with Martin hitting at a stellar .556 efficiency and adding a team-high five blocks.

Junior Alex Darby registered her second double-double of both the season and her career, posting 10 kills and a match-best 13 digs.

The opening stanza was closely contested in the early stages until an 8-0 run for State handed them a 19-7 advantage in a sequence that featured a pair of kills from junior Jaclyn Simms. After a pair of points pushed WVSU to set point, a Martin slam secured the set 25-14 and gave State a 1-0 match lead.

An early 5-5 stalemate in the second set gave the Yellow Jackets some motivation, lifting them on a five-point run double their lead 10-5. The Pioneers threatened with their own 5-0 rally, trimming the gap to just two points 15-13. A trio of points for WVSU added some cushion at 18-13, which proved necessary as Glenville kept it close after their own 3-0 run brought the mark to 21-18.

An attack error for the Pioneers delivered set point for State at 24-20, before Glenville tallied four unanswered to even the contest and ignite a game of cat-and-mouse. A rejection from Young put State back at set point before GSU tied things once more. Another set point teased the victory for WVSU, before the Pioneers tallied three consecutive points to take the set 28-26 and even the contest.

A six-point surge for the Yellow Jackets gave some momentum in the third frame, replicating the 10-5 score from the second set. The six points were part of an 11-1 rally for WVSU that brought the mark to 15-6. The Pioneers tried to chip away at the lead, but a trio of points that featured bookend kills from Darby doubled the score at 22-11.
A pair of Glenville miscues handed WVSU the 25-15 set and 2-1 match lead.

State picked up the first three points of the fourth set, and went on to register a 9-2 rally to build a 12-6 lead. The Yellow Jackets could not build more than a two-point rally the rest of the way, but secured the match after a kill from junior Kiersten Eggleton delivered the 25-17 finale.

Eggleton finished with six kills and Simms tallied five.

MATCH 2: WVSU 3, WVU TECH 0
16 Yellow Jackets appeared in the match, led by Young's seven kills. Martin and Darby each added six, and Young also topped in the net game with five blocks.

The Golden Bears led early 8-6 in the first set, before a trio of slams from State pushed WVSU ahead 9-8. Another 3-0 run, including back-to-back kills from Darby, added cushion for the Yellow Jackets at 12-9. Tech kept the match close at 13-11 before six straight points pushed WVSU to a 19-11 advantage.

Another four points, with a pair of blocks from Eggleton and Young, helped guide the squad to a 25-13 first set.

State registerd four points in the second set to build some momentum at 8-4, then went on to tally eight straight (with a pair of service aces from libero Ashlynne Davis) to go up by double digits at 17-7. State rode out the second set 25-11 with another four-point rally, including back-to-back rejections from Young, joined by Simms on the first block and freshman Alyssa Hill on the second.

The rallying carried over into the third, and ultimately final frame, as State put up five straight points to go up 11-5. The Golden Bears attempted to threaten, stringing together a series of two-point runs to trim the deficit, but State replied with back-to-back points of their own to keep the cushion. The set and match were sealed on a slam from transfer Sidney Foster, keeping State's win streak intact.

Foster finished with two kills.
