CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Yellow Jacket softball team traveled to the Watt Powell Annex to face the University of Charleston Golden Eagles, and fell in a pair of one-run games. It was the first time this season that WVSU was swept by a Mountain East Conference opponent.
POST-GAME RECORDS
WVSU: 14-12, 11-3 MEC
UC: 18-12, 10-4 MEC
GAME 1 - WVSU 5, UC 6
UC got on the board first in the bottom of the 2nd inning, 1-0. In the next half inning, Kerrigan Moore bunted with two outs, but a throwing error on the UC pitcher, allowed her to move to second and Scruggs to score.
UC answered with another run in the third, three more in the fourth and an insurance run in the fifth.
Lindsey Phares got a leadoff walk, then Emma Ruth hit a shot into left center that looked like it would fall for an extra-base hit, but the UC center fielder laid out for and made the diving catch. Kasey Murphy then boarded first base on a walk. Emily Moore then got aboard on a base hit back up the middle, which was misplayed by that same center fielder, and allowed both Murphy and Phares to score, 6-3. Paige Scruggs then blasted one over the left center field fence to bring the Jackets to within one, but that's all the Jackets could muster with a Mendoza strikeout and a Lambert flyout shutting down the comeback.
Scruggs was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, two runs scored, and a home run. Murphy fanned four and walked three in the loss.
GAME 2 - WVSU 0, UC 1
Opportunities for both teams were few and far between. The only run scored in the game was in the bottom of the sixth by UC on an RBI double. Autumn Thompson was the starter for WVSU and she fanned six in six innings in work.
The Yellow Jackets left six runners stranded on base. The best opportunity for WVSU came in the top of the second inning with Scruggs on second and Abby Loyd on first with two outs, but Layla Mendoza struck out, stranding both runners.
Scruggs and Thompson both went 2-for-3 at the plate. Scruggs also had the lone extra-base hit for the Yellow Jackets, when she hit a double in the top of the fourth.
The Jackets will travel up I-79 for the weekend. They'll take on the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats on Saturday then travel to Davis & Elkins on Sunday. Live stats and live streaming will be available for both doubleheaders.
