INSTITUTE, W.VA. – West Virginia State Baseball returns to Cal Bailey Field this weekend, welcoming Mountain East Conference South Division foes Davis & Elkins for a four-game set beginning Saturday, April 30.
First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday's first contests, and live stats and video will be available for all four games.
The Yellow Jackets enter the weekend at 20-17 with an even 12-12 record in MEC play.
THE SCOOP ON STATE
State has won six of their last seven contests, and produced their first shutout of the year in a 4-0 victory at WV Wesleyan.
Starter Quincy Thornton tossed the complete game, using just 87 pitches and striking out three and scattering just three hits. He was named Mountain East Conference Pitcher of the Week for his efforts.
Junior Trey Junkins tops the team with a .382 average, while freshman Nathan Paulsen and graduate student Matthew Kline each lead the way with three home runs.
Sophomore Ryan Kay was impressive, tallying 10 hits across the four games, including 3-hit affairs in each of the first three contests. Kay is second on the squad with a .366 clip.
Graduate student Andrew Stone continues to show extreme patience at the plate, tallying 39 total walks, a statistic that he ranks No. 10 in the country with.
The Yellow Jackets boast a trio of hurlers with a sub 2.00 ERA, led by starter Chase Norris with a 1.89 clip. The team carries a collective ERA of 5.32.
SCOUTING THE SENATORS
D&E comes into Saturday with a 6-30 ledger, and are 3-21 in conference play. The Senators have dropped 11 straight, including being swept in back-to-back series by Charleston and Concord.
Freshman Mason Brenneman tops the team with a .315 average, while the team is hitting collectively at a .191 clip. Brenneman also leads the squad with a .444 slugging percentage.
On the mound, D&E carries a 9.94 ERA, with catcher Gunnar Bettenhausen actually leading the way as a reliever with a 5.65 ERA.
