INSTITUTE, W.VA. – West Virginia State Baseball continues with conference action this weekend, hosting Mountain East Conference South Division foes Glenville State College for a four-game set beginning Friday, April 15 and concluding Saturday, April 16 at Cal Bailey Field.
First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. both Friday and Saturday, and live stats and video will be available for all four contests.
THE SCOOP ON STATE
State suffered a shutout Wednesday in their midweek contest with Lincoln Memorial, and was limited to just three hits. WVSU enters the weekend on a 14-15 clip, and 6-10 in MEC play.
This past weekend, the Yellow Jackets split their four-game series with Concord. Freshman
Nathan Paulsen launched the first grand slam of his young career in the finale, guiding State to a 7-2 victory. The rookie finished with six hits on the weekend.
Other big performers included graduate student
Andrew Stone with five hits and four RBI, younger brother
Michael Stone who tripled in back-to-back games,
Chase Norris, who tossed a complete game in the finale, picking up the win and striking out seven, and junior
Nick Loftis, who also earned the win with a six-inning performance with five punchouts.
WVSU swept the series with the Pioneers last season, downing Glenville State in all four contests.
SCOUTING THE PIONEERS
Glenville State ranks second in the South Division, just a half game back from leaders Charleston. The Pioneers carry a record of 21-9 overall and 9-7 in the league.
GSC carries a team batting average of .286 overall, led individually by sophomore Calen Kampes at .338. He also tops the squad with six home runs. Glenville boasts a roster of four other Pioneers with above .300 clips.
On the mound, Glenville carries an ERA of 3.55, topped by sophomore starter Diego Tamariz's 2.51. He ranks second on the team with 40 strikeouts, and has limited batters to a .208 average.
