Kasey Murphy homers thrice as WVSU sweeps Glenville

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University softball team swept Glenville State in a doubleheader played at the Sue Morris Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets edged GSU in the first game, 2-1, before they ran away with the second game, 5-2.

WVSU improves to 5-9 overall and 2-0 in the Mountain East Conference with the pair of wins. Meanwhile, the Pioneers fall to 4-10 on the season and 0-2 in the MEC with the two losses.

Senior Kasey Murphy homered in each game to propel West Virginia State to victory. She went 3-for-6, including three homeruns, with four runs batted in and three runs scored. She was also the winning pitcher in the first contest with a complete game performance in which she only allowed one run and struck out five opposing batters.

Glenville struck first in the opening game with an RBI-single in the bottom of the first, 1-0. Murphy then tied it up with a solo shot in the next half inning, 1-1.

Lindsey Phares reached base with a single to right field in the fourth inning. Two quick outs followed before she crucially stole second base. Paige Scruggs then singled to left field to drive in Phares from second for what would become the game-winning run, 2-1.

Murphy gave the Yellow Jackets the lead with a two-run screamer in the second inning of the second contest, 2-0. WVSU then tacked on a third run in the third when Kerrigan Moore came across on a groundout, 3-0.  A fourth run was scored by West Virginia State in the fifth when Autumn Thompson's RBI-single brought Hannah Wilson home, 4-0.

In the bottom of the fifth, Glenville State chopped the lead in half with a two-run homer, 4-2. Murphy then went yard for the third time on the day with another solo shot in the top of the sixth, 5-2. Thompson finished what she started by holding the Pioneers scoreless for the next two innings to earn the win with a complete-game outing. She made six Pioneers whiff in her seven innings of work.

The Yellow Jackets will travel to Athens tomorrow to play Concord next. The first pitch of the twinbill is scheduled for 2 p.m.
