INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- The West Virginia State University football program announced its 2022 recruiting class on Friday. The latest recruiting class for the WVSU football program was well-balanced with 14 offensive and 13 defensive additions to the roster.
"I'm thrilled to announce our 2022 signing class," exclaimed Head Coach
John Pennington. "We have a lot of guys coming back next year, so we were able to address some specific needs for next year. We added some depth at key positions and brought in a few players that we think can make an immediate impact.
"Going into this recruiting cycle, we needed to add some size and speed to our defense at every position and we were able to do that on the defensive line, at linebacker, and in the secondary. On offense, we needed to find a couple of running backs and continue to build the offensive line and we signed a few key players at those positions. Finally, on special teams we needed to get a long snapper and found an excellent player to fill that role this fall.
"In our class of 2022, we have 27 student-athletes joining the team. Twenty-three of those student-athletes have a 3.0 GPA or better! So, not only were we able to fill immediate needs, but we were able to add quality student-athletes who are academically focused. The majority of our class comes from West Virginia and Georgia. We picked up some great local players and we have a great relationship with coaches and alumni in the Atlanta, Ga. area.
The following is a list of the 27 freshmen and midyear transfers that joined the Yellow Jackets on National Signing Day (click on their names to view their Hudl profile pages and watch highlight clips):
