State drops two on first day of Eagle Invitational

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The West Virginia State University softball team dropped two games on the first day of the Eagle Invitational. The Yellow Jackets were snubbed, 6-3, by a walkoff homerun in the bottom of the seventh against King before being eight-run ruled by Carson-Newman, 11-1, after five innings.

Senior first baseman Emma Ruth hit a homerun in each of the two games and had three RBIs.

  • Shortstop Lindsey Phares went 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored, and a stolen base.
  • Pitcher Kasey Murphy (0-2) was solid through six innings but gave up a walkoff homerun to end it.
  • The Yellow Jackets collected eight hits but left seven on base.

The Tornado scored first with a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the first. State then evened the score in the top of the fourth, 1-1, when Phares doubled to left center and Tori Lambert drove her in with a single up the middle.

King struck next with a two-run homerun in the bottom of the sixth, 3-1. With two outs in the top of the seventh, Emma Ruth kept the game alive with an inside the park homerun that also scored Kerigan Moore, 3-3. The Tornado's Rikkelle Miller ended the contest in the bottom of half of the same inning with a three-run walkoff bomb.

  • Carson-Newman's Syerra Rogers only allowed two hits in five innings pitched.
  • Emma Ruth homered for the second game in a row to prevent a shutout.
  • Autumn Thompson hit a single in her only at bat.

The Yellow Jackets struck first when Emma Ruth sent a solo shot over the center field fence in the top of the first, 1-0. The lead didn't last long with the Eagles picking up two runs in the bottom of the first. Six runs were tacked on by Carson-Newman in the second followed by two more in the third and one in the fourth to enact the eight-run rule when WVSU failed to score in the fifth.
