WEST CHESTER, Pa. — West Virginia State's women's soccer team saw their season come to an end on Saturday against the West Chester Golden Rams after falling in the NCAA Regional Semifinal round. West Chester scored with 1:35 showing on the clock to end the Yellow Jackets's cinderella season.
West Chester fired the most shots faced by any Yellow Jacket goal keeper during the match, peppering the goal with 26 shots, 10 of which found the mark.
Laura Galindo made nine saves. TheYellow Jackets were limited to just 12 shots, and put six on target. Once again, WVSU surrendered a multitude of corner kicks, giving up 12 set pieces to the Golden Rams, while earning just three for themselves.
For the first 20-plus minutes of the second half, the Yellow Jackets were on their heels defensively, staring down 10 shots and allowing four corner kicks. The first shot of the half for the Jackets came in the 69th minute, a
Fran Soares-Cupertino shot that sailed high. After that the two teams seemingly played even, until the 89th minute when the Golden Rams fired their final shot of the half and it found pay dirt. The Jackets got two more shots before the final whistle but they were both saved by the West Chester goalkeeper, ending the Yellow Jackets's dream of an upset.
West Virginia State will look to build off the success of this season, but will have to reload the starting lineup for next year, as the Yellow Jackets will lose several key players to graduation over the offseason.
