PHILLIPI, W.Va. -- Alderson Broaddus struggled to keep the ball in play against West Virginia State's volleyball team, helping the Yellow Jackets complete another sweep, their 16th of the season, and 18th straight victory. WVSU dominated the match enroute to set victories of 25-14, 25-6, and 25-21.
The first set was close for the first few points of the match, but with WVSU leading 3-2,
Kiersten Eggleton served 11 straight points. WVSU contributed just four points to the run, a kill each by
Diamond'Nique Young and
Alex Darby, and two service aces by Eggleton. The rest were errors by AB on various sides of the ball. Only an Eggleton service error gave AB the much needed side-out. Neither team got more then two points at a time for the rest of the set, and a kill by Darby sealed the set one victory. State hit just .067 in the set, but they didn't need a high hitting percentage. AB was much worse with a -0.200.
The second set started much the same as the first, but with the Yellow Jackets up 10-6, the Jackets exploded with Eggleton again serving. The time, State finished off set two on a 15-point run, with State getting four kills and four straight Eggleton serves went for aces. The Battler hitting woes continued, with AB settling for a better -0.038. The Jackets were much more accurate, hitting 0.375 for the session.
The third set was the closest of the match and AB even looked poised to take the set at 21-19 and erase dreams of another sweep for State, but the Jackets rallied to score the final six points of the match with kills from
Grace Martin,
Jacklyn Simms, and Eggleton. As was the story of the entire match, match point and the sweep was secured off of an AB attack error.
Grace Martin had the hot hands for State with eight kills, five total blocks, including three block solos. Eggleton ended up with five service aces, three kills and 17 assists in the match. The Jackets only had 29 kills in the match, well short of their season average, but AB's 22 attack errors, eight setting errors and five service errors made up the remainder of the Yellow Jacket points.
WVSU returns to the Walker Convocation Center for a matchup against the West Liberty Hilltoppers on Tuesday, Oct. 11. The Hilltoppers came back and knocked off the Yellow Jackets in West Liberty last year, requiring five sets to do so and was the only loss of the regular season conference schedule for West Virginia State. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
