INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University volleyball team's 18-match win streak was snapped by West Liberty, 3-2, on Tuesday night at the Walker Convocation Center. The Hilltoppers took the first set (25-21) before the Yellow Jackets claimed the next two (25-20, 28-26) and WLU won the last two (25-20, 15-10).

The second set was close until the score reached 16-15 in favor of the Yellow Jackets. State then pulled away by scoring the next six points which included three consecutive service aces by Eggleton.WVSU led 22-15 after the run and eventually won set two, 25-20, with a pair of kills by Young at the end.

The lead was traded back-and-forth between the two teams in the third set. West Liberty secured match point at 24-23 with a kill towards the end. Simms responded with a kill before a WLU attack error handed match point to WVSU at 26-25. Another kill by the Hilltoppers tied it prior to a kill by Eggleton and another WLU attack error gave set three to State, 28-26.

The Yellow Jackets held the lead for most of the fourth set but came undone when the score reached 18-15 in favor of WVSU. West Liberty then scored nine points in a row to go up 24-18. State managed to score two points before WLU took set four, 25-20, with a kill.

West Liberty's momentum carried over into the fifth set and the Hilltoppers rushed out to a 10-5 advantage. They ended up winning set five, 15-10, and the match.

In the three sets that WVSU lost, the Yellow Jackets hit below .100. In the two sets that they won, they hit above .200.

West Virginia State will travel to Wheeling (14-7, 7-1 MEC) next on Friday, Oct. 14th for a rematch of last year's MEC Championship final.
