WVSU dusts off Notre Dame College in three sets

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – The West Virginia State University volleyball team (19-1, 6-0 MEC) only needed three sets to finish off Notre Dame College (9-13, 3-3 MEC) at the Murphy Gymnasium on Friday night. After edging the Falcons in the first and second sets (25-20, 25-21), the Yellow Jackets made quick work of NDC in the third set (25-14) for their 15th sweep of the season and 17th-straight win.

Junior outside hitter Jacklyn Simms led all players with 13 kills in the match. Classmate Diamond'Nique Young was close behind with eight kills of her own. Juniors Peri Martin and Kiersten Eggleton handled the distribution with 22 and 15 assists, respectively.

The first set was neck-and-neck until midway through when the score reached 14-13 in favor of State. A pair of kills from Alex Darby and a service ace by Peri Martin with two attack errors by Notre Dame in between suddenly gave the Yellow Jackets a six-point cushion, 19-13. The Falcons battled back to within two points of WVSU, 21-19, before State claimed four of the last five points to win set one, 25-20.

In the second set, the Yellow Jackets held onto the lead in the early stages. The lead slipped when the Falcons registered five-consecutive points to tie the set at 15-all. A kill from Natalie Beer halted the short streak and allowed State to get back to playing with the lead for the rest of the set. A NDC service error followed by back-to-back WVSU service aces ended set two, 25-21.

The Yellow Jackets then ran away with the third set, 25-14. They quickly seized a 9-3 advantage before increasing the differential to 10 points, 18-8, following four-straight errors by Notre Dame. Simms recorded the last two points needed by State with a pair of kills to sweep the Falcons.

WVSU did not make many mistakes in the contest as a .386 team hitting percentage showed on the stat sheet. NDC hit .185 in comparison.

The Yellow Jackets will have a quick turnaround for their next game at Alderson Broaddus (6-10, 0-6 MEC) tomorrow. The away match is scheduled for noon.
