No. 17 WVSU suffers first defeat of season to No. 22 Frostburg

FROSTBURG, Md. – The No. 17 West Virginia State University women's soccer team (14-1-2, 12-1-2 MEC) suffered their first defeat of the season to No. 22 Frostburg State (15-1-1, 13-1-1 MEC) on Wednesday night at Bobcat Stadium.

Senior forward Esther Dhiramo threatened the most with four shots and one on goal. Graduate winger Brooklyn Pritt fired off three shots in the match with a team-high two on target. Sophomore netminder Laura Galindo made seven saves in the game despite conceding a goal early on.

The Bobcats struck first within two minutes of the opening whistle. A high-arching cross was sent into the top of the six-yard box. Frostburg's Lela Clark was left unmarked at the back post and fired a shot into the back of the net, 1-0.

The Yellow Jackets almost responded immediately when Fran Soares-Cupertino passed to a wide-open Brooklyn Pritt inside the 18-yard box. The opposing goalkeeper charged at Pritt and was able to fall on her shot from close range.

Esther Dhiramo then came close to equalizing in the 12th minute. She caught up with a throw in that was lobbed over her head and banged a shot off the crossbar.

The next good chance to equalize for State came in the 25th minute when Paula Herold lined up for a free kick from distance. She sent into the top of the six-yard box to be headed on by Soares-Cupertino. The well-timed header was sent wide right to barely miss the mark.

A similar situation occurred in the 31st minute. This time, Soares-Cupertino took the free kick from the opposite side of the pitch. Her kick towards goal ricocheted off multiple defenders before landing at Dhiramo's feet. Dhiramo then sent in a screamer that missed high and right of the sticks.

By the conclusion of the first 45 minutes, West Virginia State only managed five shots with two on target. Meanwhile, Laura Galindo faced 11 shots from the Bobcats and made five saves to keep it a one-goal match.

Cierra Savin was the first Yellow Jacket to threaten the opposing keeper in the second half. She took a shot in the 55th minute that was aimed high and center into goal. The well-placed shot was punched over the crossbar to keep the score as is.

Dhiramo then took a shot from 20 yards out in the 60th minute that required a diving save from Frostburg's goalie. Pritt challenged the keeper again five minutes later. She took a shot from the top of the 18-yard box that required yet another diving save.

For the remainder of the contest, WVSU was unable to break down the staunch FSU defense. Sandra Linares replaced Yasmin Evans in the 75th minute to add an extra forward to the attack. With an extra attacker on the pitch, State proceeded to barrage the Bobcats with long ball after long ball. Unfortunately, none of those long balls created a good opportunity for the Yellow Jackets to score and the final whistle blew with the Bobcats still in the lead.

West Virginia State took a total of 14 shots in the match, one less than the Bobcats. Six of State's shots were on target compared to eight by Frostburg.

The Yellow Jackets will wrap up the regular season with a short road trip to rivals Charleston on Saturday, Oct. 29 next. The match is set for a 4 p.m. kickoff. WVSU has already secured the No. 1 seed in the South Division for the MEC Tournament.
