West Virginia State takes down Glenville State in four sets

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University volleyball team (23-4, 10-3 MEC) defeated Glenville State (14-15, 3-10 MEC) in four sets at the Waco Center on Tuesday night. The Yellow Jackets dropped the first set (25-23) before taking the next three (26-24, 25-14, 25-22).

Juniors Jacklyn Simms and Diamond'Nique Young each tallied 14 kills to lead the WVSU attack. Graduate student Grace Martin picked up 13.5 points for the Yellow Jackets with nine kills and a game-high eight total blocks, including one solo block. Setter Kiersten Eggleton dished out a team-high 29 assists while libero Ashlynne Davis scooped up a team-leading 23 digs.

Freshman Bethany Ledford had a breakout performance with a season-high eight kills on a .571 hitting percentage. She also recorded a service ace, a block assist, and eight digs in the match.

In the first set, the Pioneers inched out in front early on and held onto the lead until a 4-1 run by State finally leveled the score at 18-all. Two kills by Ledford and two blocks by Grace Martin made up the short spurt. For the rest of set one, points were traded by the two sides except for when Glenville came up with back-to-back kills to go up by two, 22-20. That little bit of separation was all that was needed for GSU to end up taking the opening set, 25-23.

The second set was the most pivotal of the match. Down 21-18, West Virginia State scored the next five-straight points with a pair of Ledford kills, two assisted blocks by Grace Martin and Eggleton, and an attack error by the Pioneers. At the conclusion of the stretch, WVSU was suddenly in the driver's seat with a 23-21 advantage.

Three consecutive kills by Glenville then flipped the tables as the Pioneers gained setpoint with a 24-23 lead. Head Coach Kris Kern used his second timeout to gather his troops and prevent losing another set to GSU. The strategy worked as Peri Martin assisted on back-to-back kills by Eggleton and Ledford. Glenville's Katarzyna Niderla was then stuffed by Grace Martin and Ledford to award the second set to the Yellow Jackets, 26-24.

The momentum of dramatically winning set two carried over into the third set. Before the Pioneers had a chance to catch their breath, State seized a seven-point advantage, 11-4, after a service ace from Ledford. Glenville never came close to catching back up and WVSU cruised to a 25-14 victory to gain a 2-1 advantage in the match.

The fourth set was another close one that reached a 19-apiece stalemate towards the end. Four consecutive kills by the Yellow Jackets then made Glenville's job difficult. Eggelton registered the first kill before assisting on the following three to give State a 23-19 lead. The next three points all went to the Pioneers to cut the lead to one, 23-22. An attack error by GSU then set up a matchpoint which was captured with an emphatic kill by Young, 25-22.

The Yellow Jackets hit .244 in the contest while holding Glenville to a .168 hitting percentage.

West Virginia State will return to Institute for Senior Night on Friday, Oct. 28 next. WVSU will host West Virginia Wesleyan (7-20, 3-10 MEC) for a 7 p.m. meeting.
