Yellow Jackets tally 19th sweep of season against Frostburg

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The WVSU volleyball team (22-4, 9-3 MEC) sent Frostburg State (16-12, 4-8 MEC) home after playing three sets on Saturday morning at the Walker Convocation Center. The Yellow Jackets recorded their 19th sweep of the year by staving off the pesky Bobcats in each set (25-20, 25-23, 26-24).

Junior Kiersten Eggleton registered her second triple-double in less than 24 hours with 12 kills, 22 assists, and 14 digs. She was ranked fourth in the country in triple-doubles before this week started. Fellow juniors Diamond'Nique Young and Jacklyn Simms each smashed 13 kills to lead the WVSU attack. Meanwhile, sophomore libero Ashlynne Davis led the defensive effort with a game-high 20 digs.

The Yellow Jackets seized a 6-3 lead at the beginning of the first set after a trio of kills. The Bobcats then tied it up at 7-all with their own 3-0 run.

The score evened three more times until State finally pulled away with a pair of attack errors by Frostburg and a pair of kills by Eggleton. The four consecutive points awarded to WVSU gave the Yellow Jackets a 15-11 advantage to work with. For the rest of set one, they kept FSU at arms length and coasted to a 25-20 win.

In the second set, State rushed out to a commanding 15-7 lead with 12 kills, one service ace, and only two attack errors made by the Bobcats. The Yellow Jackets seemed likely to cruise to victory, but Frostburg responded with a 15-8 run in the latter half of set two to close the gap to a single point, 23-22. Both Eggleton and Simms ensured that the comeback stopped there by notching a kill each with a WVSU attack error in between, 25-23.

The third set was close until four different Yellow Jackets totaled six kills as part of a 6-1 run that stretched State's lead to eight points, 20-12. Set three, much like set two, seemed in hand until a 9-1 run by the Bobcats suddenly brought the set to a deadlock at 21-apiece.

Points were traded back-and-forth for the next six rallies to even the score at 24-each. Natalie Beer earned the next point with a kill before Young ended the final set at 26-24 with her own kill.

West Virginia State was better than Frostburg at distributing the ball and capitalizing on attacking opportunities. The Yellow Jackets tallied 53 assists and 55 kills compared to 37 assists and 40 kills by the Bobcats. WVSU also defended better with 16 more digs as a team than FSU.

The Yellow Jackets will take a road trip to Glenville State (14-14, 3-9 MEC) next on Tuesday, Oct. 25 for a 7 p.m. match.
