Volleyball drops tight four-setter to Fairmont State

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University volleyball team (21-4, 8-3 MEC) was clipped by Fairmont State (23-3, 9-2 MEC) in a four-set, tight-knit match on Friday night at the Walker Convocation Center. The Yellow Jackets won the first set (25-23) before dropping the last three (25-22, 25-23, 25-21).

Junior Kiersten Eggleton notched her fourth triple-double of the season with 11 kills, 24 assists and 14 digs. She is currently ranked fourth in the nation in triple-doubles. Outside hitter Natalie Beer and middle hitter Diamond'Nique Young each tallied 14 points to lead the Yellow Jackets. Beer registered 12 kills and four block assists while Young recorded 11 kills, a solo block and four block assists.

West Virginia State went in front early in the first set but were caught by Fairmont State when the score leveled at eight-all. The score remained close until WVSU went on a 6-2 run midway through the set to gain a four-point cushion, 18-14. The Falcons tugged at State's heels until eventually another deadlock occurred at 23-apiece. Grace Martin and Jacklyn Simms then smashed home two kills in succession to bring set one to a close, 25-23.

The Yellow Jackets picked up the first point of the second set to briefly hold the lead and then trailed Fairmont for the remainder of the set. Towards the end of set two, WVSU came back to within two points, 22-20, of the Falcons on a 3-1 run that included two kills from Grace Martin and one from Beer. The WVSU run went no further, however, as FSU picked up three of the next five points to claim the set, 25-22, and tie the match.

In the third set, Eggleton fueled a 10-3 run for the Yellow Jackets with four kills and a block a assist to put WVSU in the driver's seat. State led by five, 13-8, at the conclusion of the stretch. The Yellow Jackets clung to the lead until FSU was able to tie it up at 22-even. Points were traded by the teams before Fairmont's Nyla Birch posted back-to-back kills to give the Falcons a 2-1 advantage in the match.

The fourth set was neck-and-neck in the early stages until FSU gathered momentum with a short 6-1 spurt that left WVSU down by six, 14-8. Peri Martin's service ace at the end of a 4-1 State run brought the Yellow Jackets back to within one point, 19-18, in the latter stages of set four. The Falcons were able to keep WVSU from coming any closer and soon seized the set, 25-21, and therefore the match.

State recorded a higher hitting percentage in the first set only. Both teams attacked 174 times to keep the other side constantly on their toes.

The Yellow Jackets will be back in action tomorrow at the Walker Convocation Center with a shot at redemption against Frostburg State (16-11, 4-7 MEC). The match is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start.
