WVSU finishes off Concord in under an hour

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University volleyball team (21-3, 8-2 MEC) swept Concord (6-20, 0-10 MEC) in less than an hour at the Walker Convocation Center on Tuesday night. This marked the 18th sweep of the season for State.

Junior Kiersten Eggleton recorded a career-high six service aces on her way to a game-high 15.5 points. She also registered 18 assists, 13 digs and nine kills in the match. Classmates Diamond'Nique Young and Alex Darby tallied 11 and nine kills, respectively.

The Yellow Jackets went up 12-4 early on in the first set after scoring five unanswered points. They then went on another 5-0 run later in the set to increase their advantage to 13 points, 20-7. State ended set one with four consecutive kills to take it easily, 25-9.

WVSU trailed early in the second set and were down by two points, 10-8, before going on an impressive run. The Yellow Jackets scored 10-straight points to take back control and go up 18-10. Three of those points were the result of attack errors made by the Mountain lions, four were service aces by Eggleton, two were kills, and one was a block. Darby finished off set two with back-to-back kills, 25-15.

The third set was not much of a contest. The Yellow Jackets fended off Concord in the early stages then went on a 14-3 run to leave the Mountain Lions in the dust. WVSU led by 13 points, 20-7, at the conclusion of the stretch. State finished off set three with four consecutive points including a service ace by Ashlynne Davis to claim the set, 25-11, and the match.

WVSU posted an amazing .435 hitting percentage as a team. The Yellow Jackets totaled 45 kills in the game compared to a mere 18 kills by CU.

State will face a much tougher test in Fairmont State (22-3, 8-2 MEC) on Friday night at the Walker Convocation Center next. The Falcons were swept by Wheeling tonight. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
