Pritt slots two goals in WVSU shutout of D&E

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The No. 20 Yellow Jackets took down Davis and Elkins for the second time in the season at Dickerson Stadium on Saturday, 2-0. Brooklyn Pritt put away both goals for the Yellow Jackets with Paula Herold helping on one, and Fran Soares-Cupertino assisting on the other.

State improves to 13-0-1 on the season, 11-0-1 in conference play. D&E slips to 6-6-1, 5-6-1 in the Mountain East.

The Yellow Jackets scored in the sixth minute to throw the Senators off their game early on. Soares-Cupertino sent in a cross from the far left side of the pitch that found Pritt right in front of the goal. Pritt proceeded to chip the ball over the outstretched arms of the charging keeper after taking a touch. The ball dropped over the goal line and bounced into the left side of the netting, 1-0.

Pritt scored again ten minutes later to increase West Virginia State's advantage. A ball slipped through the high line being played by D&E's defense. She ran through the line of defenders and left them in the dust for a one-on-one opportunity. Pritt then coolly slotted a shot on the turf into the left side of goal, 2-0.

Laura Galindo made a fantastic diving save in the 30th minute. D&E's Alexa Karsel took a shot from distance that was headed for the inside of the goalpost. Galindo fully extended her arms as she dived to her right and pushed the ball outside of the post for a corner kick.

The score remained 2-0 at the halftime whistle with one more good chance coming with 30 seconds to go. Soares-Cupertino lined up for a free kick from about 25 yards out after getting fouled. Her shot was aimed directly at the goalkeeper for an easy save.

The contest lulled in the opening 15 minutes of the second half. The first real chance came in the 63rd minute when Soares-Cupertino turned and took a shot from distance that banged off the top of the woodwork. Pritt then took a shot in the next minute that required a save. Two more shots were taken by Pritt and Soares-Cuprtino in the 65th minute that both missed high.

The Senators banged their own shot off the woodwork in the 71st minute. Galindo was there for the save in case the shot did fall under the crossbar.

At that point in the match, State had opted to sit back in defense to hold onto the lead. Between the 66th minute and the final whistle, Davis & Elkins took 10 shots compared to three by the Yellow Jackets. The 'park the bus' tactic worked for WVSU as no goals were scored by D&E to ensure the two-to-nil victory.

Soares-Cupertino was sent off in the final minute of the match after picking up her second yellow card for dissent. Her first came in the 39th minute for a reckless challenge.

State hits the road for a road match against West Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday, Oct. 19. State took down the Bobcats in Institute on Sept. 18, 2-1. That match will kickoff at 7:15 pm.
