Women’s Basketball tumbles versus Elizabeth City State, 89-77

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University women's basketball team fell to Elizabeth City State, 89-77, on Monday afternoon at the Walker Convocation Center. The Yellow Jackets were not up to their usual speed after the holiday break, but were able to outscore their opponents in the second and fourth quarters.

WVSU drops to 7-3 overall and remains at 3-2 in the MEC following the defeat. Meanwhile, ECSU improves to 10-2 and stays at 2-1 in the CIAA after the win.

Five Yellow Jackets scored in double-digits including Alana Kramer (12), Shelby Harmeyer (12), Hannah Shriver (12), ZZ Russell (10), and Destiny Fields (10). Emyah Fortenberry was the game's leading rebounder with 11 boards.

An 8-0 scoring run lasting nearly two and a half minutes boosted Elizabeth City State to a 10-1 lead early in the first quarter, where they maintained control at 14-4 with just under five minutes to play in the opening frame.

After a trey from the Yellow Jackets' Shelby Harmeyer cut the ECSU lead in half at 14-7, State continued to trim the deficit, largely courtesy of three consecutive free throws from Destiny Fields to bring WVSU to within six points at 18-12 with just under three minutes to go in the quarter.

The Vikings responded with an offensive surge, hauling in nine straight points to end the first quarter with a 27-12 advantage.

The Yellow Jackets opened up the second quarter with a jumper from Alana Kramer, followed less than a minute later with back-to-back threes from the duo of Harmeyer and Charity Shears to bring the score to 29-20. State continued to chip away at the Vikings lead, and eventually tied the contest at 33-33 after a trio of three pointers, bookended by sophomore ZZ Russell.

ECSU quickly regained the lead on a pair of free throws followed by a quick lay-in to go up 37-33, but State continued to keep the margin close, using a Fields jumper and a basket from the arc by Kiya Thompson to cut the Vikings' lead to just three with under two minutes remaining in the half.

Junior guard Hannah Shriver found a burst in the final minute of the half, hauling in four points on a jumper and two from the charity stripe, to bring WVSU just one point away at 43-42.

A three in the final 10 seconds pushed Elizabeth City back to a four-point advantage as the teams entered the locker rooms for halftime.

The momentum the Yellow Jackets had been building was doused as the third quarter commenced as Elizabeth City State assembled a 19-5 run lasting over six minutes and put the Vikings up with a commanding 65-47 lead.

State began to show life in the final minutes of the frame on a trey from Thompson, a pair of free throws from Russell, and four straight points from Kramer, narrowing the gap to 69-56, before a jumper from the Vikings pushed them to 71 as the third quarter came to a close.

The Yellow Jackets outscored ECSU 21-18 in the fourth quarter, but the late effort was not enough to overcome the 15-point deficit at the end of the third.

Elizabeth City State shot 58 percent from the floor compared to 36 percent by West Virginia State.
