FROSTBURG, MD. – Backed by double-digit scoring performances from graduate students Glen Abram and Jeremiah Moore, West Virginia State University Men's Basketball lengthened their win streak to 10 games Saturday after downing league foe Frostburg State 88-77 in Bobcat Arena.
State improves to 15-5 on the year and 10-3 in Mountain East Conference action, while Frostburg slips to 6-14 and 4-10.
Abram registered 33 points in the contest, just two shy of his season high. Moore added 20 with 12 boards, recording his seventh double-double of the season. Sophomore Noah Jordan posted 14 points, and freshman Dwaine Jones finished the game with 10. Jordan also recorded a double-double with 16 rebounds, his third of the year.
Sophomore Anthony Pittman achieved a career milestone, tallying his 1,000th career point as he finished the game with eight. Pittman added five rebounds and four assists.
Pittman started the scoring for State with a dunk, and the two teams traded points before the Yellow Jackets put up five consecutive points, spurred by another slam- this time from Jordan- to build an edge over the Bobcats 14-8.
An offensive spark from Jordan with another dunk and a three pointer helped WVSU add cushion to their lead at 23-16 with a little over 11 minutes left in the half.
Frostburg narrowed the gap to a four-point margin late in the frame after a three-pointer, but a trey from Abram in the final seconds of the half solidified the State advantage at halftime, 41-35. Abram logged 18 points in the first half alone.
Early into the second half, Pittman reached the 1,000 Point Club on a layup on a dish from Abram, allowing the Yellow Jackets to maintain a 10-point distance at 49-39.
The Bobcats started to threaten as the second quarter waned on, going on a 12-4 run over two and a half minutes and coming within two points of State at 53-51 with 14:37 on the clock.
Abram quickly put boosted State, firing off back-to-back threes followed by a Moore layup to put the Yellow Jackets back to a double-digit lead at 61-51.
Frostburg State again applied pressure, with a 9-4 scoring sequence to again trim State's cushion to four points at 70-66 with just under eight minutes remaining in regulation.
A trio of free throws from Abram and a pair from Pittman once again kept WVSU with a double-digit advantage at 77-66 with 5:11 on the clock.
Frostburg State continued to try and chip away at the Yellow Jackets, but points from Jordan, Moore, and Abram in the final two minutes sealed the victory for State, 88-77.
