Volleyball Opens MEC Play with Sweep over Concord Tuesday

INSTITUTE, W.VA. --  West Virginia State Volleyball picked up its fifth-straight victory Tuesday in Walker Convocation Center, registering a sweep over Concord (25-18, 25-9, 25-11) to begin Mountain East Conference action.

The Yellow Jackets improve to 10-2 on the season with their third consecutive sweep, and have dropped just one set in their last 15.

"The conference is so much better in the last five years, top to bottom, and there are no easy nights," head coach Kris Kern said. "Concord is a much improved team, and in fact their leading hitter didn't play tonight, so we expect just as tough a game when we play them there. Give them credit, their libero was playing injured and still had 22 digs."

The squad was led by senior Jenna Dufresne, who was honored before the game for reaching the 1,000 career kill mark earlier this season. Dufresne posted 15 slams in the contest, hitting at a .538 efficiency.

"Dufresne- she is who she is. She's a 1,000 kill player. Gabby [Gabrielle] Bullock is getting close to that, and anytime you have two kids in that rare air, you're doing something right," Kern added of his senior stalwarts.

Bullock finished the night with nine kills, along with classmate Grace Martin, who turned in a .438 hitting clip.

The opening stanza began as a close contest, with the two squads play cat-and-mouse to set the tone of the set. State tallied four straight points to build an advantage late in the frame, as a pair of Bullock kills put WVSU up by five. Martin secured the set with back-to-back slams to give the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead.

State dominated in the second frame, using an 11-0 run to build a heavy 19-5 cushion over the Mountain Lions. Bullock tallied three kills in the rally, while sophomore Kiersten Eggleton was also successful, registering four.

State took a 2-0 match lead after back-to-back kills from Dufresne finished the frame on a 25-9 mark.

The Yellow Jackets continued with the momentum into the finale, using a kill from Martin and two from Dufresne to begin to build an early lead at 8-4. Using another 3-0 run to widen the gap at 11-5, State then recorded six straight points, with Eggleton responsible for five of them with two kills and three service aces. Leading 18-7, WVSU cruised to victory, picking up match point on an ace from Dufresne.

Eggleton finished the match with nine kills at a .444 efficiency, adding 14 assists with seven digs.
