West Virginia State drops game to Frostburg State, 34-21

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The West Virginia State University football team fell to Frostburg State, 34-21, on Saturday afternoon at UC Stadium at Laidley Field.

The Yellow Jackets drop to 0-2 overall, 0-1 in the Mountain East Conference with the defeat. Meanwhile, the Bobcats leap to 2-0 on the season, 1-0 in the MEC with the victory.

Junior quarterback Donovan Riddick completed 14-of-27 passes for 199 yards and two touchdowns. Senior wideout Keedrick Cunningham caught both touchdown passes and had a team-leading 79 receiving yards.

Junior linebacker Payton Lunsford was once again West Virginia State's leading tackler. He made eight total tackles, five solo tackles, and one sack. Senior defensive back Gerron Fryer came up with his first interception of the year while adding four tackles to his season totals.

The Bobcats struck first with a 65-yard touchdown reception on the first play of a drive around the eight-minute mark in the first quarter, 7-0. The Yellow Jackets responded by driving 57 yards down the field on the next possession. However, the drive stalled in the red zone when a sack was taken on an attempted fourth down conversion.

Frostburg State put together a 10-play, 78-yard scoring drive on the next possession that ended with a 21-yard pass for another touchdown, 14-0. The second scoring drive for the Bobcats extended into the second quarter and left 11:18 on the clock.

The Bobcats scored again in the second quarter on a seven-play, 75-yard drive that was capped with a 47-yard pass completion for a touchdown, 21-0. West Virginia State was left with 2:37 in the first half to answer.

The Yellow Jackets finished off the first half with a seven-play, 76-yard drive that resulted in a touchdown, 21-7. A defensive pass interference call setup Riddick for a 11-yard rush to paydirt.

The second half started with Fryer coming up with a huge interception on the opening drive. The momentum suddenly favored WVSU until the Yellow Jackets were forced to punt after five plays.

The Bobcats extended their lead to three scores again after they recovered a fumble on a punt return towards the end of the third quarter. They rushed four times for a total of 36 yards to get into the end zone, 28-7.

Cunningham showed his play-making ability to start the fourth quarter. He came down with a pass from Riddick and took it 60 yards to the house, 28-14.

Frostburg State then drove 75 yards on the next possession to tack on six more points, 34-14. Possessions were then traded by the two teams leaving the Yellow Jackets with three minutes to make up the deficit.

West Virginia State proceeded to march 62 yards down the field to close the gap to 13 points, 34-21. Barry Hill picked up 27 yards on a reception that left 11 yards to the goalline. On fourth down, Riddick found Cunningham for the final score of the game with 17 seconds remaining.

WVSU totaled 333 offensive yards and picked up more first downs than Frostburg State despite the defeat.

The Yellow Jackets hit the road to take on Fairmont State (0-2, 0-1 MEC) next on Saturday, Sept. 18th. The kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
